The invention relates to a process of refining refined palm fruit oil products that yields a refined oil product having an exceptionally low content of 3-MCPD fatty acid esters. More particularly, the present invention provides a process of refining a crude palm fruit oil product, said process comprising the successive steps of: a) removing phospholipids and/or free fatty acids from a crude palm fruit oil product by subjecting the oil product to a pretreatment, thereby producing a pretreated palm fruit oil product with a reduced phospholipid content and/or a reduced free fatty acid content; b) simultaneously or sequentially contacting the pretreated palm fruit oil product with bleaching earth and a porous silica material to produce a bleached palm fruit oil product, said porous silica material having a surface area of at least 10 m 2 /g and being selected from the group consisting of silica, amorphous silicate, zeolite and combinations thereof; and c) deodorizing the bleached palm fruit oil product to produce a refined palm fruit oil product; wherein the pretreated palm fruit oil product is contacted with the porous silica material at a temperature of at least 95°C and wherein the bleached palm fruit oil product is deodorized at a temperature of not more than 240°C. The invention also relates to a refined palm fruit oil product obtained by the aforementioned process and to an edible product containing 1 -80 wt.% of such refined palm fruit oil product.

A method for degumming and esterification of an oil comprising fatty acid glycerides, free fatty acids, and phospholipids comprises the steps of mixing the oil, a C1 to C5 monohydric alcohol, and methanesulfonic acid to form a reaction mixture, and heating the reaction mixture to esterify the free fatty acids and produce a fatty acid alkylester and water, and to degum the oil. The method further comprises the steps of causing a phase separation between a first phase comprising the C1 to C5 monohydric alcohol, phosphorous compounds, and water, a second phase comprising the fatty acid glycerides and the fatty acid alkylester, and a residual solid phase. Once the phase separation occurs, the second phase is separated from the first phase and the residual solid phase.

The present invention relates to a process of refining palm oil in order to produce a refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm oil with reduced level of 3- monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) esters and equivalent RBD palm oil quality for all range of crude palm oil (CPO) feed. Accordingly, the process comprises the steps of water degumming of crude palm oil, removal of aqueous phase by centrifugation, followed by acid degumming at lower temperature. Water degumming removes 3-MCPD esters precursors while controlled acid degumming purifies the crude oil from gums and impurities. The degummed oil is then washed with certain amount of water and the aqueous phase is removed by centrifugation to remove remaining 3-MCPD esters precursors after acid degumming. Subsequently, bleaching is conducted with an activated bleaching earth and silicate adsorbent (for example magnesium silicate, calcium silicate and aluminum silicate) as filter aid and final adsorption of the 3-MCPD esters precursors prior to deodorization step. In this way, the refining process allows production of RBD palm oil with less formation of 3-MCPD esters even from low quality CPO.
