Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a substrate for alignment of a liquid crystal may include: forming a vertical alignment layer on a substrate; performing an alignment process on the vertical alignment layer in a first direction; forming a protective layer at a partial region of the vertical alignment layer; performing an alignment process on other regions of the vertical alignment layer in a second direction; and removing the protective layer. A liquid crystal display device manufactured using the substrate for alignment of a liquid crystal ensures wide viewing angle and alignment stability with relatively simple processes as compared with the conventional vertically aligned (VA) mode liquid crystal display device.
Abstract:
Optical shutter (50), e.g. fortstereoscopic shutter glasses, is disclosed. The optical shutter includes a light source, e.g. LCD, CRT or plasma display, that emits polarized light (12) that has a first polarization state, a first polymeric substrate (100) that receives the polarized light and transmits the polarized light without substantially changing the first polarization state of the polarized light, a second polymeric substrate (107) that faces the first polymeric substrate, and an optical stack (60) that is disposed between the first and second polymeric substrates. The optical stack includes first and second electrically conductive layers (101, 102), first and second oriented chromonics alignment layer (103, 106), and an oriented liquid crystal layer (105).
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of fabricating a transparent gas barrier film by using plasma surface treatment and a transparent gas barrier film fabricated according to such method which has an organic/inorganic gradient interface structure at the interface between an organic/inorganic hybrid layer and an inorganic layer. Since the method of the present invention is capable of fabricating a gas barrier film by plasma surface treatment instead of deposition under high vacuum, it can mass-produce a transparent gas barrier film with excellent gas barrier properties in an economical and simple manner. Further, since the transparent gas barrier film fabricated according to the method of the present invention shows excellent gas barrier properties and is free of crack formation and layer-peeling phenomenon, it can be effectively used in the manufacture of a variety of display panels.
Abstract:
An optical device and a method of forming the same is described. The optical waveguide includes a substrate, an etch-stop layer adjacent to the substrate, a barrier layer adjacent to the etch-stop layer, and an active waveguide having a lower cladding layer adjacent to the barrier layer. Also described is a method of coupling to at least one active waveguide. The method includes etching an active waveguide with a high selectivity towards a crystallographic plane to form a sloped terminice with respect to a substrate upon which the active waveguide is formed, and depositing at least one other waveguide over the etched sloped terminice and at least a portion of the substrate, wherein the at least one other waveguide is photonically coupled to the etched active waveguide to provide photonic interconnectivity for the etched active waveguide.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an electrically switchable laminate construction for applications including smart windows, and other uses and applications in which light management is desired. The electro-optical laminate construction has scattering and transparent modes of operation for dynamically controlling electromagnetic radiation flow.
