    Abstract: An LED unit (20) having increased light output. The LED unit (20) includes a submount substrate (22) having a cavity (24). An LED chip (30) is electrically mounted within the cavity (24) and a phosphor layer (34) is deposited in the cavity (24) that converts blue light from the LED chip (30) into white light suitable for a vehicle headlight (10). The walls of the cavity (24) are metalized (40) to increase the light output intensity. In one embodiment, a clear protective layer (46) is deposited in the cavity (24) over the phosphor layer (34).

    Abstract: An LED headlamp assembly (10) for a vehicle. The headlamp assembly (10) includes a plurality of LED units (14) mounted to a common carrier (16), where the LED units (14) include one or more LEDs and generate white light. The headlamp assembly (10) further includes a headlamp housing (28) that is mounted to the vehicle by a mounting frame (52). The carrier (16) is sealed to' the housing (28) by a flexible bellows (34). An outer lens (26) is mounted to the housing (28) so that the LED units (14) are positioned within a sealed compartment (42). A backside of the carrier (16) outside of the sealed compartment (42) includes fins (46) or other heat sinking devices t o remove heat generated b y the LED units (14). The frame (52) allows convective air to flow around the heat sink (46) to remove heat from the LED units (14). A series of actuators (56) and/or pivots (58) are mounted to the frame (52) and to the carrier (16) so that the carrier (16) can be moved on at least one axis to adjust the direction of the LED headlamp assembly (10).

    Abstract: A vehicle side mirror (10) that includes an internal case frame (30) having a spherical concave support portion (38) and a 'T shaped' retention post (40). The spotter mirror (28) also includes a backing plate (54) having a dish portion (56) with a center opening (58). The backing plate (54) is positioned against the case frame (30) so that the support portion and the dish portion (56) cooperate and the retention post (40) extends through the opening (58) in the dish portion (56). The spotter mirror (28) further includes a single piece retention ring (66) having ramped cam surfaces (72, 74) and leaf springs (78). The retention ring (66) is positioned within the dish portion (56) so that the retention post (40) extends through a center slot (58) in the ring (66). The retention ring (66) is rotated so that ramped cam surfaces (72, 74) push against a back surface of the post (40). The pointing direction of the glass (86) can be manually adjusted by rotating the dish portion (56) on the support portion (30).

    Abstract: A folding assembly (10) for a vehicle side mirror that employs specialized ramped détentes (58). The folding assembly (10) includes a pivot tube (30) and a pivot spring (32) rotatably coupled to a case frame (16) and rigidly coupled to a base frame (24). The base frame (24) includes a series of ramped détentes (58) that are seated within corresponding recesses (64) in the case frame (16). The inside angle (beta1) of the ramps of the détentes is steeper than the outside angle (beta2) of the ramps of the détentes according to a predetermined formula so that when the case frame (16) is rotated relative to the base frame (24), and the détentes move out of their recesses, the force of the rotation is distributed along the entire length of the ramp to increase the durability performance of the mirror and thus its longevity.
