Abstract:
A wireless communication device includes an antenna (600g) configured with two conductive elements (601/602) separated by an insulating medium (603). One conductive element (602) is a ground plane and the other is a microstrip line (601). The ground plane (602) is formed with a bend (644) proximate an end. The microstrip line and the ground plane exhibit a characteristic impedance that may vary along the length of the microstrip line. The separation distance of the microstrip line (601) from the ground plane (602) is changed to reduce the resonant frequency of the microstrip line.
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and computer readable media for analyzing an image using machine learning and human computation. A method for analyzing an image includes providing, via multiple instances of an interactive application (334) for analysis of the image, multiple instances, respectively, of the image and receiving, via the interactive application, data (240) from results of analyses of the image including multiple sets of user inputs from the analyses of the multiple instances of the image, respectively. The multiple sets of user inputs are from multiple users, respectively and the multiple users are associated with the multiple instances of the interactive application, respectively. The method further includes processing the received data to identify areas of interest within the image based on the multiple sets of user inputs and analyzing the image using a machine learning algorithm (245) to identify structures in the image based on the identified areas of interest within the image.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to methods of rational genome mining. A method may include narrowing the number of clones that would otherwise need to be screened and/or identifying a gene with a desired catalytic activity. The disclosure also relates to a nitrile hydrolase from Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110 first identified by rational genome mining. In addition, the disclosure relates to nitrilase bll6402 and catalytically active variants capable of converting an α-hydroxy nitriles, a β-hydroxy nitrile and/or an α, ω-dinitrile to a carboxylic acid.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method to reduce the size of a microstrip antenna (900) without sacrificing antenna efficiency too much are described. The antenna structure includes discontinuity of strip width in the middle of the antenna patch (902) to reduce the size of the antenna at a given resonant frequency. The antenna structure further includes a plurality of patches of different widths connected to each other at junctions (912). The junctions (912) are placed symmetrically to ensure maximum radiation at the boresight and also to further reduce cross-polarization levels. A coaxial feed (906) is connected at a predetermined location near the center of a patch, having a narrower width, in order to match the input impedance of the antenna to the coaxial feed (906).
Abstract:
A thermal detector (B) includes a transducer layer (2) of semiconducting yttrium barium copper oxide which is sensitive at room temperature to radiation and provides detection of infrared radiation. In a gate-insulated transistor embodiment, a layer of ferroelectric semiconducting yttrium barium copper oxide (34) forms a gate insulator layer and increases capacitance of the transistor or latches of the transistor according to the polarization direction of the ferroelectric layer.
Abstract:
A microstrip antenna has a single dielectric layer with a conductive ground plane disposed on one side, and an array of spaced apart radiating patches disposed on the other side of the dielectric layer. The radiating patches are interconnected with a feed terminal via stripline elements. Responsive to electromagnetic energy, a high-order standing wave is induced in the antenna and a directed beam is transmitted from and/or received into the antenna. A dual-mode embodiment is configured such that standing wave nodes occur at the intersection of orthogonally situated striplines to minimize cross-polarization levels of the signals and the cross-talk between the two modes of operation.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a co-crystal of creatine and citric acid obtained by milling, methods of making the same that include a process for the preparation of co-amorphous formulation of creatine and citric acid, the process comprising: mixing creatine and citric acid; milling the creatine and citric acid for a time sufficient to form a co-amorphous solid, which co-amorphous solid can be converted into a co-crystal, and nutritional supplements that include the same.
Abstract:
This device allows one to measure seismic activity from a hand-held device, in particular a mobile phone. A microfabricated whispering gallery mode (WGM) based seismometer operates in conjunction with an application installed on a mobile phone. By converting the sensor output from the seismometer, a measurement is performed by the application with a simple cross- correlation operation that requires low processing power.
Abstract:
Werner's Syndrome helicase (WRN) interacts in Tat/TAR-RNA chromatin-remodeling complexes assembled on the HIV-1 LTR to promote transcriptional activation and viral replication. WRN markedly increases basal HIV-1 transcription and synergizes with Tat to support LTR trans-activation. Inhibition of WRN functions, through expression of the trans-dominant-negative WRNK577M mutant, potently represses HIV-1 LTR trans-activation and prevents intracellular synthesis of p24Gag and inhibits virus production in HIV-infected H9HIV-1IIIB lymphocytes. Therefore, the present disclosure provides a novel target for anti-HIV therapy. Methods and compositions of the disclosure may be used to perform high throughput screens for small molecule anti-HIV therapeutics. Such therapeutics may inhibit a stage in the HIV replicative cycle not affected by current anti-HIV drugs.
