    摘要: A milk product including a level of at least 31IU vitamin E per serving of said product which can conveniently provide at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day to an individual ingesting the product. The vitamin E is uniformly microdispersed throughout the product, and ingestion of at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day in the product is sufficient to cause the fasting plasma vitamin E/cholesterol ratio in human subjects to be elevated at least 50 % above the basal fasting level of vitamin E measured in the same subjects consuming no vitamin E dietary supplements. A method for elevating the plasma vitamin E level at least 50 % in human subjects is also described. The method includes ingesting a milk product as described.

    摘要: A method and composition for reducing or eliminating stinging that may accompany application of topical solution of a skin-compatible polymeric material to a skin wound, abrasion, burn or other skin injury. The topical solution may contain one or more skin-irritating chemicals, such as diethyl ether, ethanol, ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and combinations thereof. The method includes: (i) providing a composition that contains between 1% and 10% by weight of the skin-compatible polymeric material dissolved in a liquid medium suitable for human topical use in which the liquid medium includes less than 20% combined weight of skin-irritating chemicals, and at least 45% combined weight of at least one volatile solvent and/or volatile co-solvent, in which the molecules constituting this 45% combined weight portion of the liquid medium contain at least 5 carbon atoms, and the liquid medium has an initial boiling point at 1 atmosphere of greater than 35°C and less than 150°C, and causes little or no stinging when applied to a skin injury, and (ii) applying the composition to the skin of a patient at the site of the skin injury.

As a result, the rate of oxidation of EPA/DHA fatty acids added to the aqueous suspension via the supplementation oil can be reduced substantially, e.g., at least two-fold or even much more compared to the rate of oxidation of an equal quantity of the same EPA/DHA fatty acid-containing enriching oil homogenized into the same aqueous suspension without having been first combined and diluted with the oxidative stabilization oil.

    摘要: Nutritional fat or oil-based compositions for increasing HDL cholesterol, decreasing total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol and decreasing the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio in human plasma are described. The compositions can advantageously include at least 10% of myristic acid and/or lauric acid in which at least 3% of said fatty acid composition is myristic acid and at least 3% is lauric acid; in some cases at least 1% by weight myristic acid and/or lauric acid is esterified at the sn-2 position in triglyceride molecules. The compositions also include between 5% and 40% by weight linoleic acid, and typically further include at least 10% by weight monounsaturated fatty acids and between 15% and 55% by weight total saturated fatty acids. The sum of weight percentages for saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids equals 100%. In desirable cases, the composition is substantially cholesterol-free. Also described are fat compositions and diets which are adapted to limit increases in blood triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL, even in the presence of dietary cholesterol.

    摘要: A nutritional supplement, prepared food product, or direct food additive for ingestion by mammals, and methods for preparing such products, are provided. Products of the invention comprise an oxidation-resistant fat-based composition substantially free of exogenous solubilizing and dispersing agents for phytosterols. The fat-based composition includes greater than 25% and less than 75% by weight of one or more triglyceride-based edible oil or fat, and greater than 25% and less than 75% by weight of one or more non-esterified phytosterols. The fat-based composition, when exposed to air, contains a reduced amount of oxidative by-products compared to a similar fat-based composition lacking non-esterified phytosterols. Also provided are methods for reducing plasma cholesterol in mammals, and methods for protecting plasma lipoproteins and cholesterol from oxidation by ingestion of products of the invention.
