Described herein are apparatuses and methods for preventing or otherwise reducing scaling and fouling of a membrane using ultrasonic vibrations. One example method involves: (1) directing a solution to a membrane of a membrane assembly, where the membrane passes a solvent of the solution through the membrane at a first rate, and where the membrane prevents at least some of a solute of the solution from passing through the membrane; and (2) causing a piezoelectric material that is physically coupled to the membrane to produce ultrasonic waves directed at the membrane, where the ultrasonic waves induce oscillations in at least a portion of the membrane and thereby the solvent of the solution passes through the membrane at a second rate that is greater than the first rate.

The invention is an ultrafiltration system and process for concentrating latices with ultrasonic flux enhancing and membrane cleaning capabilities. The ultrafiltration system for the concentration of latices mainly comprises a first tank (1), a second tank (2), a pump (3), and at least one vertically disposed ultrafiltration membrane module (4). Each module is provided with a plurality of vertically disposed tubular membranes (13) for filtering the latex feedstock and with a plurality of ultrasonic transducers (9) to generate ultrasonic waves for enhancement of membrane permeation flux. The process of ultrafiltration is carried out by utilizing the system where latex feedstock is pumped through the membrane module for ultrafiltration, where lower molecular portions of the feedstock pass through the tubular membrane as permeate and higher molecular portions of the feedstock are retained as retentate (latex concentrate). The process is repeated until the desired latex concentration is achieved.

A filtration system (10) comprises an array of filtration vessels (12) mounted on support assemblies (14). each vessel (12) houses a number of primary stage filtration elements (16) in the form of microfiltration and/or ultrafiltration membranes and a plurality of secondary stage filtration elements (18) in the form of nanofiltration and/or reverse osmosis filtration membranes. The vessel (12) has an inlet port (20) for directing a fluid feed through the filtration membranes (16,18) and a central conduit (22) receives permeate produced by the filtration membranes (16, 18). A chamber (24) collects and directs concentrate from the vessel (12) via a concentrate outlet port (26). A permeate chamber (28) receives permeate from the membranes (18) and from the membranes of at least one other vessel (12) and an outlet port (30) directs permeate from the chamber (28). The permeate outlet ports (30) and the permeate chambers (28) of the vessels (12) are interconnected. Further a modular support system, a module secure system, a flow control device and a pulsation means are disclosed.
