The present disclosure relates to apparatuses for mechanically modifying substrates. The apparatuses include a bonding roll (107) and an anvil roll (106). The bonding roll (107) includes a pattern element (118). The pattern element (118) and associated pattern surface (120) do not extend completely around the circumference of the bonding roll (107). As such, the bonding roll (107) also includes one or more bearer rings (128) that engage the anvil roll (106) during portions of the bonding roll (107) rotation where the pattern element (118) is not in engagement with the anvil roll (106). The pattern element (118) and bearer rings (128) herein are configured to help reduce vibrations in the anvil roll (106) and/or bonding roll (107) caused by the alternating engagements of the pattern surface (120) and bearer rings (128) with the anvil roll (106) during rotation.

Apparatus and methods are provided to allow for creation an elastic laminate. Non-stretched elastic can be laid at peaks over a nonwoven layer contained in valleys and atop peaks. Stretched elastic can be laid over tented nonwoven to create nonwoven tunnels when a second nonwoven is laid atop the first nonwoven and elastic, and the tunnels resist unstretching of stretched elastic strands by frictional or obstruction forces. A laminated material comprising a first and second layer of material bonded at spaced apart bond sites is disclosed, with a plurality of elastic strands disposed in a non-linear manner between said first and second layer of material, so that said strands meander in a cross-machine direction and traverse a machine direction line, restraining movement of the strands by frictional forces between the strands and the non-woven layers.

Methods for forming discrete deformations in web materials are disclosed. In some embodiments, the method involves feeding a web into an apparatus having nips that are formed between intermeshing rolls. The apparatus may be in the form of nested or other arrangements of multiple rolls, in which the web is maintained in substantial contact with at least one of the rolls throughout the process, and at least two of the rolls define two or more nips thereon with other rolls. In some embodiments, rolls can be used to expose a different side of the web for a subsequent deformation step. In these or other embodiments, the rolls can be used to transfer the web between rolls in such a manner that it may offset the rolls and/or web so that subsequent deformations are formed at a different cross-machine direction location than prior deformations.

The tube portion includes a polymer tubed layer secured to a portion of the top surface of the support layer of the bottom laminate sheet and a tubed tab portion formed integrally with the polymer tubed layer and secured to a portion of the adhesive layer of the top laminate sheet. The support layer of the bottom laminate sheet is secured to the adhesive layer of the top laminate sheet by a remaining portion of the adhesive layer and the polymer support layer, the tubed tab portion, and the portion of the adhesive layer therebetween form a tab portion.

A test strip or biosensor comprising a base substrate on which an electrode system is formed. One or more laminate layers overlie the base substrate to form a sample-receiving chamber in which a reagent is deposited. An opening is provided from the sample-receiving chamber to the exterior of the biosensor. The layers and the base substrate are laser welded to secure the biosensor. One of the layer and base substrate is light transmissive to allow laser welding at the interface therebetween. The biosensor may be formed from a series of continuous webs that are subsequently sliced to form individual biosensors.
