摘要:
The invention provides a process for producing a synthetic quartz glass, comprising: (a) depositing fine quartz glass particles synthesized by flame hydrolysis of a glass-forming material, on a substrate, to form a porous quartz glass base; (b) presintering the porous quartz glass base; (c) heat-treating the presintered porous quartz glass base by holding it under vacuum at a temperature in the range of from 1,100°C to below the vitrification temperature for a certain time period; and (d) heating the thus heat-treated porous quartz glass base to a temperature not lower than the vitrification temperature to obtain a synthetic quartz glass. According to the process for synthetic quartz glass production of the invention, a synthetic quartz glass having a reduced OH group amount and a uniform OH group concentration can be obtained. From the synthetic quartz glass, an optical member having excellent optical properties can be obtained.

Disclosed are high purity synthetic silica glass material having a high OH concentration homogeneity in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis, and process of making the same. The glass has high refractive index homogeneity. The glass can have high internal transmission of at least 99.65%/cm at 193 nm. The process does not require a post-sintering homogenization step. The controlling factors for high compositional homogeneity, thus high refractive index homogeneity, include high initial local soot density uniformity in the soot preform and slow sintering, notably isothermal treatment during consolidation.

A luminescent element of next-generation optical device that by photoluminescence (PL), exhibits a large half-value width of emission spectrum in the wavelength region of visible light so as to realize broad light emitting characteristics and enables white light emission. Silica glass is produced through a firing operation for firing a product of pressure molding of silica microparticles such as fumed silica, wherein the firing temperature is regulated within a range not exceeding 1000°C so as to satisfactorily carry out dehydration condensation reaction with respect to OH groups of silica microparticles to thereby attain clearing and wherein amorphous defects having occurred during the reaction are retained without being reduced. This silica glass is used as a phosphor.

Disclosed are a method for dehydration used in the optical fiber preform manufacturing process, and method and apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber using the dehydration method. In the dehydration method, when the dehydrating gas is supplied into a tube during the optical fiber preform manufacturing process, dehydration reaction gas included in the dehydration gas is activated using a light source which emits light having a predetermined frequency capable of activating the dehydration reaction gas included in the dehydrating gas into atoms or ions. Then, the method uses the activated dehydration reaction gas generated as a result of the above process to eliminate moisture or hydroxyl group causing optical losses during the optical fiber preform manufacturing process.
