The invention concerns a friction-reducing additive for water-miscible or non-water-miscible cooling lubricants which contains: a) bismuth compounds of organic acids; and b) sulphurous organic compounds, in a mixture ratio such that the sulphur content of the additive ranges from 2 to 30 wt % and the bismuth content ranges from 1 to 25 wt %. The invention further concerns the use of this additive in the minimal lubricating technique and as a friction-reducing additive for non-water-miscible cooling lubricants and water-mixed cooling lubricants and their concentrates.

This invention relates to novel water soluble metal working fluid compositions, their use to work metal, a process for working metal using such compositions and the metal worked article of manufacture. More particularly, this invention relates to fluid compositions useful in cutting, grinding, shaping and other metal working operations which require a lubricant. The terms "first Group A" and "second Group B" are used herein to denote different groups and not to indicate any sequence of use or selection as any possible combination or sequence of use of a component(s) is envisioned without limit of any kind. The disclosed fluid compositions are also anticorrosive and environmentally more acceptable than current oil based fluids. There has now been discovered an essentially odorless, substantially non-oil misting, water-soluble metal working fluid comprising at least one component selected from a first Group A herein and optionally one or more components selected from a second Group B herein preferably with the balance of the composition being water and other (optional) minor ingredients. When a component is employed from Group A and a component is employed from Group B the action of the combination generally enhances performance of the resulting combination with contain moieties from both Group A and Group B.

A lubricating oil composition for stepless transmissions prepared by blending a lube base oil with (A) a sulfur base extreme-pressure agent, (B) a phosphorus base extreme-pressure agent, and (C) an alkaline earth metal base detergent. The component (A) is selected from among sulfurized fats and oils, thio-carbonates, thioterpenes and so on; the component (B) from among tricresyl phosphate, amine salts of alkyl and alkenyl phosphates and so on; and the components (C) from among calcium phenate and so on. This composition is excellent in wear resistance and extreme-pressure properties and can keep a high coefficient of friction for a long time, so that it is useful as a lubricating oil composition permitting the transmission of a great capacity of torque for stepless transmissions of, particularly, metallic belt type.

Sulfur-containing composition comprising the combination of: (A) at least one first sulfur-containing material which comprises the reaction product of a sulfur source and at least one Diels-Alder adduct in a molar ratio of at least 1.7:1; (B) at least one second material which comprises (B-1) the reaction product of a sulfur source and a Diels-Alder adduct in a molar ratio of less than 1.7:1, (B-2) a terpene compound, (B-3) at least one other olefinic compound of the formula (VII): R R C=CR R , wherein R , R , R and R are, independently, hydrogen or any organic group, and the olefinic double bond is a non-aromatic double bond, (B-4) a mixture comprising (B-2) and (B-3), (B-5) sulfur-containing materials obtained by sulfurizing a terpene (B-2), at least one other olefinic compound (B-3) or mixtures of (B-2) and (B-3), and (B-6) an organo disulfide of the formula (VIII): R-S-S-K, wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group. The sulfur-containing compositions are useful as additives for lubricants and functional fluids.
