摘要: Disclosed herein are embodiments of bio-lamina bioreactors and methods of making and using the same. The bio-lamina bioreactors disclosed herein can make fuels from organic reactants using fluid flow through the bio-lamina bioreactors in combination with microorganisms capable of reacting with the organic reactants. The microorganisms are embedded within biofilms present within the bio-lamina bioreactor. The bio-lamina bioreactor further comprises bio-lamina substrates comprising unique flow channels and structural projections that facilitate fluid flow and interactions with the microorganism cultures of the biofilm.

摘要: Systems and methods are provided for growing algae and/or other microorganisms in a controlled environment while reducing or minimizing the amount of energy required for maintaining desired conditions in the growth medium. The systems can be based on a photobioreactor having a "tube-in-tube structure", where an outer cylindrical tube contains a heat regulation fluid that surrounds one or more inner cylinders that contain microorganisms in growth media. The heat regulation fluid in the outer cylinder, as well as the outer cylinder itself, can assist with regulating the temperature of the growth media in the inner cylinder(s).

摘要: Methods and devices are provided for the formation of cardiac tissue constructs. In some embodiments, methods are provided for forming cardiac tissue constructs that including cardiomyocytes, non-myocytes, and extracellular matrix, and which exhibit properties associated with healthy cardiac tissue. In some embodiments, microfabrication platforms are provided to support the transmission of dynamic electromechanical forces, such that the cardiac microtissue constructs may be formed mimicking the basic microenvironment found in the heart. The microfabrication platform may include retaining features for stabilizing the position of the microtissue construct during its formation, and the microfabrication platform may include a ramped support configured to produce tissue constructs having a ring geometry. In some embodiments, the microfabrication platform may be configured to for the application of point electrical stimulation, and/or to amplify the transduction of force into a visible displacement.

摘要: A method is provided for seeding cells at a cell seeding surface. The method includes the steps: (i) providing a cell seeding surface; (ii) providing a flowable cell suspension; (iii) locating a cell suspension shaping cover above the cell seeding surface to form a shaped space between the cell suspension shaping cover and the cell seeding surface; and (iv) flowing the cell suspension into the shaped space while the cell seeding surface is held substantially horizontal. In the method, the cell suspension is in contact with the cell seeding surface, the depth of the cell suspension across the cell seeding surface being defined and constrained by a corresponding depth of the shaped space.

摘要: The present invention generally relates to nanowires and, in particular, to multiwell plates comprising nanowires, including systems and methods of making the same. Such multiwell plates can, in some cases, be used in automated equipment or high-throughput applications. For example, a plurality of cells may be placed in at least some of the wells of the multiwell plate, and one or more nanowires may be inserted into at least some of the cells within the wells of the multiwell plate. In some cases, one or more of the nanowires may have coated thereon a biological effector. The cells in each of the wells may be identical or different, and/or the biological effector may the same or different. Such multiwell plates may be used, for example, to test a biological effector against a variety of cell types, or to test a variety of biological effectors against a one or more cell types, or the like.
