Methods are provided for inducing differentiation of blood monocytes into functional antigen presenting dendritic cells. The blood monocytes are treated by exposing the monocytes to proteins adhered to the surface of a treatment device to induce differentiation of the monocytes in to dendritic cells. The treated monocytes may be co-incubated with disease effector agents which have been rendered apoptotic or other source of antigens. The apoptotic disease effector cells are phagocytized by the maturing dendritic cells, hi a preferred embodiment, the blood monocytes are treated in the plastic device without use of a photoactivatable agent and light.

Methods and compositions for enhancing development of a preimplantation mammalian embryo and for increasing the live birth potential of an in vitro fertilized mammalian embryo are disclosed. An in vitro method of activating the peroxisome proliferator activator receptor d (PPARd) in a preimplantation mammalian embryo comprises culturing an embryo in an embryo culture medium, and upon or after commencement of expression of PPARd in the cells of the embryo, activating the PPARd by adding an amount of a PPARd ligand to said medium effective to bind to PPARd to deter apoptosis in the cells of the cultured embryo and/or increase proliferation of the cells of the cultured embryo.

The present invention relates to preventing or delaying programmed cell death by expressing one or more anti-apoptotic polypeptides in a cell expressing recombinant Factor VIII such that programmed cell death in the cell is prevented or delayed. The present invention also relates to increasing production of recombinant Factor VIII by expressing one or more anti-apoptotic polypeptides in a cell such that production of recombinant Factor VIII by the cell is increased.
