This invention provides an assembly comprising a sensing electrode and a counter electrode in contact with a membrane body formed from a solid polymer electrolyte system comprising a fluorinated polymer matrix and a charge carrying component which is dispersed in the matrix the electrodes and membrane being housed in a housing having a gas diffusion barrier through which gas may flow. The charge carrying components are fluorinated organic proton conductors (such as heptadecafluorooctane sulphonic acid, bis-trifluoromethane sulphonamide, N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-1,1,1-trifluoromethane sulphonamide, N-benzyltrifluoromethane sulphonamide and N, N-1,2-cyclohexanediylbis (1,1,1-trifluoromethane sulphonamide)). The polymer matrix is a homopolymer or copolymer of vinylidene fluoride preferably with fluorinated comonomers. The solid polymer electrolyte system preferably contains plasticising additive(s) and is cast as a coating onto one or more electrodes eg. Lithium batteries in which the battery separator is formed directly on one of the electrodes, e.g., the positive electrode. The battery separator comprises silica particles dispersed in a polymeric matrix. The polymermatrix is selected from styrene -isoprene-styrene or polyvinylidene fluoride. A second porous layer can be interposed between the electrode and the porous layer that comprises silica particles dispersed in a polymeric matrix. The presence of the silica particles enhauses the conductivity of the separator and lead mechanical strenght to the separator, and the underlying siica layer minimises the amount of polymer that penetrates into the pores of the electrode.

The invention provides a method of protecting an ion insertion material from the degradative effects of a liquid or gel-type electrolyte material by deposing a protective, solid ion conducting, electrically insulating, layer between the ion insertion layer and the liquid or gel-type electrolyte material. The invention further provides liquid or gel-type electrochemical cells having improved durability having a pair of electrodes, a pair of ion insertion layers sandwiched between the pair of electrodes, a pair of solid ion conducting layers sandwiched between the ion insertion layers, and a liquid or gel-type electrolyte material disposed between the solid ion conducting layers, where the solid ion conducting layer minimizes or prevents degradation of the faces of the ion insertion materials facing the liquid or gel-type electrode material. Electrochemical cells of this invention having increased durability include secondary lithium batteries and electrochromic devices.

A polymer electrolyte comprises a polymer combined with a solution of a salt in a plasticising solvent, and the polymer is a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VdF), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE). The proportion by weight of vinylidene fluoride is at least 85 %. The polymer has a large enough molecular weight that its melt flow index, at 230 DEG C and 21.6 kg, is less than 5.0 g/10 min. The resulting polymer electrolyte may be referred to as a solid electrolyte or a gelled electrolyte, and is suitable for use as the separator/electrolyte in an electrochemical cell, such as a secondary lithium ion cell.
