Responsive to a user request (502) for performance of a selected one of the multimedia presentations, playback of a corresponding beginning segment (504) is commenced, recording of a corresponding multimedia presentation (506) for which broadcast has already begun is commenced, and playback is switched (508) from the beginning segment to the recording of the broadcast presentation when the playback content of the beginning segment correlates with content in the recording of the broadcast presentation.

A broadcaster (110) transmits an interactive application (170) that includes a plurality of retirement instructions associated with external events and internal program states of the interactive application (170). A broadcast receiver (140) receives an interactive application (170), stores the included retirement instructions, and executes the interactive application (170) concurrently with the display of an associated television program. The broadcast receiver (140) monitors the broadcast signal (180) for events indicating that the executing interactive application (170) is no longer appropriate for the current television program. Upon detection of such an event, the broadcast receiver (140) retrieves the stored instructions, and retires the interactive application (170) in a manner appropriate for both the detected external event and the internal program state of the interactive application (170), according to the stored instructions.

摘要： An addressable cable television control system controls television program and data signal transmission from a central station (11) to a plurality of user stations. The data signals include both control and text signals in video line format which are inserted on the vertical interval of the television signals, thereby freeing all channels for transmission of both television and data signals. Moreover, full-channel teletext data in video line format may be transmitted on dedicated next channels with the modification of only head end processors (16). An intelligent converter (40) at each remote user location uses the data signals to control access to the system on the basis of channel, tier of service, special event and program subject matter. The converter uses a graphics display generator (118) to generate display signals for the presentation of the text data on the television receiver (36) and for the generation of predetermined messages for the viewer concerning access, emergencies and other functions. The converter processes vertical interval text data and selected full-channel text data, both transmitted in video line format. The keyboard of the subscriber (146, 168) provides a number of different functional inputs for the subscriber to interface with the system. The converter (40) also includes apparatus for interfacing with two-way interactive data acquisition and control systems.
