The present invention provides a means to produce an image in gray scale on a film using direct thermal imaging, and preferably near infrared direct thermal imaging. The present invention provides a multi-layered, laminated, non-cavitated film that has proper surface characteristics and heat transfer properties by virtue of the proper combination of polymeric layers and coatings, in particular, the active direct thermal coating, and topcoat which produce direct thermal imaging with gray scale. Such a film may be used for temporary personal identification devices, for instance, hospital wristbands and backstage passes, and may incorporate bar code data, photographs as well as other pertinent data.

A serrated cutting strip (26) for a carton comprises paper or board impregnated with a mix of acrylic resin and urea formaldehyde. The strip is 0.2 to 0.5 mm in thickness and can bend without cracking over a bar of 20 mm diameter. The strip has adhesive on one side and a release sheet (28) on the adhesive. The method for preparing the label causes no generation of defects, and shows an excellent production rate and work efficiency. The label has no possibility of forgery, and shows clear marking characteristics. In addition, the label has a simple structure and excellent printability and cost efficiency, causes no degradation of the quality with time, shows high chemical resistance and heat resistance, is free from various contaminants during use, and is provided with low initial adhesion but high permanent adhesion.

A flexible wrap (10) for enclosing a cable splice (20) without external heating comprises a gel layer (1) and a support layer (2), the wrap having sufficient flexibility to be manually gathered into wrinkles around the smaller parts of the cable-to-splice transition with the gel sealing the resulting enclosure. The support layer (2), which is preferably made of low density polyethylene, provides mechanical strength and facilitates the application of the wrap (10). A vapour barrier layer (3), preferably made of aluminium, may be applied on the support layer (2). A protective layer (4) may be applied on the vapour barrier layer (3). An adhesion-reducing substance (6) may be applied on at least part of the side of the gel layer (1) facing away from the support layer (2) to allow adjustment of the wrap (10) when applied on the cable splice (20). Elastic or rubber tape (11) may be wound around the applied wrap (10) to compress the gel. A re-enterable closure having a long sealing length is obtained.
