This invention relates to a magnetic bubble device including propagation channels (14, 24, 40) and a passive replicator element (10). The replicator element (10) is a single element which has at least three peripheral areas (18, 20, 32) in spaced relation that are associated with propagation channels (14, 24, 40). When a rotating in-plane magnetic field is applied to the replicator (10), a first magnetic bubble passes from input channel (14) to the first area (18) and then to second area (20), where the bubble is split into second and third bubbles (30, 34). Asynchronous, collision-free communication of data packets is provided on a local shared bus network interconnecting a plurality of N ordered transceiving ports (1,2,3....,J,...N). The bus network includes a data bus (20) having a propagation delay time T and a control line (26) having a propagation delay from port J to port N of R(J), each port J including means (40) for ascertaining the presence of a data packet on said data bus at said port J, and being adapted to send and receive on said data bus variable length data packets. Each port J upon having a packet available for transmission executes the steps of placing a signal S(J) on said control line (26) to communicate to ports J + 1, J +2,...,N an intention to transmit a packet, delaying transmission for the time interval R(J) + T, ascertaining that no signal indicating an intention to transmit is being received at port J from any of ports 1,2,...,J- 1 , and that said data bus (20) at port J is unoccupied, transmitting the packet and terminating signal S(J). Prior to placing the signal S(J) on the control line (26), the port J ascertains that the data bus (20) is unoccupied for a time period 2T.

A close-packed magnetic bubble propagation device includes a pattern having a plurality of propagation elements (40) arranged in at least four adjacent rows (25A, 25B, 27A, 278). These elements (40) are spaced to provide a period or spacing of bubbles in these rows of less than three bubble diameters. Upon application of a rotating in-plane field (51) to the elements, bubbles in adjacent rows move in opposite directions. A preferred embodiment of this propagation device has at leasttwo storage loops (24A, 24B) which contain at least four adjacent horizontal rows (25A, 25B, 27A, 27B) of propagation elements and an access path (46) which passes through each of the loops. An electrical conductor (44) is associated with the propagation elements so that the passing of a current through the conductor together with the application of the in-plane rotating field (51) to the elements causes bubbles associated with the elements in the access path to move along the access path.

This invention relates to a thin film of an amorphous magnetic material including ion-nitride having the formula FexNi-x, where x is from 0.4 to 0.7. The film is deposited on a substrate by sputter deposition in the presence of an inert gas and at a pressure from 25µm to 100µm. The coercivity of the magnetic material varies as a function of the gas pressure employed during sputtering.
