The present invention provides a therapeutic agent or prophylactic agent for a disease that requires enhancement of nerve growth factor production, an enhancer for nerve growth factor production, or a food, beverage or feed for enhancing nerve growth factor production, each comprising as an effective ingredient a specified compound or a salt thereof having enhancing activity for nerve growth factor production; a method for enhancing nerve growth factor production, comprising administering to a mammal the above-mentioned compound or a salt thereof; and use of the above-mentioned compound or a salt thereof in the preparation of a therapeutic agent or prophylactic agent for a disease that requires enhancement of nerve growth factor production, an enhancer for nerve growth factor production, or a food, beverage or feed for enhancing nerve growth factor production. In addition, the present invention provides novel compounds having enhancing activity for nerve growth factor production.

The present invention is a method for inducing cytotoxic T cell having an antigen-specific cytotoxic activity, a method for maintaining the cell, a method for continuously culturing the cell or a method for expanding the cell, comprising the step of culturing a cytotoxic T cell in the presence of at least one substance selected from the group consisting of (A) a substance having a binding activity to CD44; (B) a substance capable of regulating a signal emitted by binding a CD44 ligand to CD44; (C) a substance capable of inhibiting binding of a growth factor to a growth factor receptor; (D) a substance capable of regulating a signal emitted by binding of a growth factor to a growth factor receptor; and (E) fibronectin, a fragment thereof or a mixture thereof.

DHCP (4,5-dihydroxy-2-cyclopenten-1-one) has been previously shown to have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Global transcriptional pattern of E. coli was analyzed in response to DHCP by DNA microarray. It is now shown that DHCP has widespread effects in E. coli, affecting genes encoding proteins involved in general metabolism and cell membrane synthesis and functions. In addition, rpoS and RpoS-regulated genes responding to various stresses are upregulated. DHCP is also shown to inhibit AI-2, an autoinducer involved in interspecies quorum-sensing, and the genes comprising quorum-regulated processes such as virulence, motility and outer membrane functions are downregulated by DHCP treatment. In addition, cysK which is a known quorum-sensing gene working in an alternate pathway(s) in E. coli increases considerably in response to DHCP. These results suggest that DHCP regulates the switching on/off of the different quorum-sensing circuits in E. coli.
