A process of forming a value of standard resistance (3) for an automotive vehicle and a vehicle control system are disclosed. The process comprises sensing operating parameters (APO,VSP) indicative of operating conditions of the vehicle power train during operating an engine to keep the automotive vehicle rolling over the surface of a flat road in steady running state at each of said predetermined number of reading points of vehicle speed. A value of driving torque produced by the power train is derived from the sensed operating parameters at each of the predetermined number of reading points of vehicle speed. Finally, the derived values of driving torque are set as known standard resistance values at the predetermined number of reading points of vehicle speed, respectively.

A control system controls the output of a power source of a vehicle having a continuously variable transmission and a gear ratio to be set by the continuously variable transmission. The control system determines a target driving force (F) on the basis of an output demand and a vehicle speed, and determines a target output of the power source (P) for achieving the target driving force. The control system determines a target output speed preset for the target output, and controls the gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission (Step S4) so that the actual output speed of the power source may become the target output speed. The control system further determines the target output torque (To) of the power source on the basis of the target output and the actual output speed of the power source, and controls the power source to achieve the target output torque. When the gear ratio is to be changed, its changing rate is made different in at least two quick and slow states. Moreover, the target output speed is provided with an upper limit, which is changed.

The invention relates to a control system for the drive train of a motor vehicle with at least one drive unit and an automatic gearing. During functioning of the vehicle, a theoretical value for the driving torque of the vehicle or for the output torque of the gearing is determined by the driver. The different operating points of the drive train are characterized by at least different output torques of the drive unit and speed transmissions and/or different output speeds of the drive unit. The invention is characterized in that, during functioning of the vehicle, a set of ratings is determined for each possible operating point. An optimization process makes it possible to then select, on the basis of the determined ratings, one of the possible operating points as the optimal operating point. The gear ratio pertaining to this selected optimal operating point is then adjusted to the level of gearing. Another logical way of adjusting the gear ratio is to adapt the output speed pertaining to the chosen operating point by modifying the gear ratio.

An apparatus and a method for controlling an automotive vehicle are disclosed, in which a control amount for securing safety of the vehicle and the control amount for achieving a state intended for by the driver of the vehicle are switched in such a manner as to reduce the shock due to the change in the torque generated from the power train, thereby accomplishing both safety and maneuverability at the same time. A first target value is set for controlling at least selected one of the driving torque, the driving force and the acceleration/deceleration rate. A second target value is calculated in accordance with the drive mode intended for by the driver or the driving environment ahead of the vehicle. In the case where a deviation exceeding a predetermined value develops between the first target value and the second target value, the fluctuations of at least one of the driving torque, the driving force and the acceleration/deceleration rate are suppressed.

An automatic transmission such as a continuously variable transmission or an automatic transmission with a plurality of gear positions is controlled using a target acceleration (Go) map which contains target accelerations corresponding to first indications (e.g., the amount (ϑ AP ) of depression of an accelerator pedal or the engine throttle opening) representative of the driver's intention for acceleration or deceleration and second indications representative of speeds of the motor vehicle. The target acceleration map is arranged such that when each of the second indications is constant, each of the target accelerations increases as the first indication increases, at a rate which is greater if the first indication is smaller. From such a target acceleration map, a target acceleration is determined on the basis of the actual values of the first and second indications at the time, and the speed reduction ratio of the automatic transmission is controlled so that the target acceleration is achieved. In the target acceleration map, cruising speeds of the motor vehicle vary linearly as the first indications vary.
