A bone stabilizing apparatus includes a stem member and an extension member, the stem member (1) having a distal end (6) for insertion within the intramedullary canal of a human humerus and the proximal end (8) connected to the extension member. The extension member (2) has radially directed threaded holes either pre-formed or created after the bone stabilizing apparatus is installed into the humerus. The threaded holes (20) allow fixation of stabilizing screws (22) with suture posts (28), or a washer structure (26) to grip the surface of the bone and/or surrounding ligaments or muscle. A prosthetic or the natural humeral head can be attached to the extension member. In a preferred embodiment a guide structure directs the drill and stabilizing screws radially through the central axis of the extension member.

The problems addressed by the invention are those of avoiding an adhesion of the bone to the spacer and a release of wear products, achieving that the patient does substantially not experience any mobility restriction, and keeping the wear and tear of the spacer as little as possible. These problems are solved in that at least one component of the spacer (1) is made of a ceramic material, of a plurality of ceramic materials, or of a non-ceramic material having a ceramic coating.

A shoulder replacement prosthesis has a head (12) for replacing the humeral head and a connection shaft (14). The head has a domed portion (16) and a flange (18) positioned at an end region of the domed portion, and the flange (18) has a width (22) which varies around the domed portion, having a greater width at a part corresponding to a region of the greater tuberosity than at a part corresponding to a region of the lesser tuberosity. The flange is provided with a plurality of connection portions (24) for securing the tendons attached to the tuberosities. By dimensioning the flange appropriately, the anatomical positioning of the tendon to bone connections can be more accurately replicated. In particular, the flange acts to bridge the so-called bare area of the humeral head. The flange (18) provides a firm immovable surface area to which connections can be made, for example by partridge bands of greater surface area and rigidity than conventional sutures. Bands may also pass to a clamp so that a plastic cage surrounds the tuberosities.
