The device for blood sample preparation for determining the concentration of glucose in the blood plasma relates to medicine, more specifically to clinical laboratory diagnostics and endocrinology, and can be used for the diagnosing of diabetes mellitus. The device is a vacuum vial with a bar code and a protective cover of grey colour assembled with a rubber stopper comprising an inert separation gel in an amount of 0.6-1.2 g at the bottom and a mixture of potassium oxalate with sodium fluoride on the walls of the vial. The device provides increased accuracy of determining the glucose concentration in blood plasma, reduces the time of sample preparation, reduces the risk of haemolysis during transportation and storage of blood, and reduces the risk of infection of laboratory personnel with blood-borne infections.

A device and method for separating serum or plasma from blood cells in a whole blood specimen. The present invention uses a cap with a reservoir, such that blood cells are packed into the cap when the specimen container is centrifuged. When the cap is removed, the blood cells are also removed, and the serum or plasma is left in the specimen tube where it can be readily extracted by a pipette which is able to reach all the way to the bottom of the specimen tube minimizing the dead volume.

Barcode tag conditions on sample tubes are detected utilizing side view images of sample tubes for streamlining handling in clinical laboratory automation systems. The condition of the tags may be classified into classes, each divided into a list of additional subcategories that cover individual characteristics of the tag quality. According to an embodiment, a tube characterization station (TCS) is utilized to obtain the side view images. The TCS enables the simultaneous or near-simultaneous collection of three images for each tube, resulting in a 360 degree side view for each tube. The method is based on a supervised scene understanding concept, resulting in an explanation of each pixel into its semantic meaning. Two parallel low-level cues for condition recognition, in combination with a tube model extraction cue, may be utilized. The semantic scene information is then integrated into a mid-level representation for final decision making into one of the condition classes.
