The invention provides a telephone caller with ready access, regardless of his or her location, to an array of calling features and services through an automated interface. The invention provides a caller with these features and services by accessing a central database (112) via a regional processing node (110). In this manner, a caller may access the same personalized telephone services from anywhere in the world without having to be aware of, or conform to, particular protocols or access procedures required within any given local telephone network. The invention also serves to prompt the caller in the caller's language-of-choice, and accepts commands via standard dual-tone multi-frequency ("DTMF") signals and/or verbally in the caller's language-of-choice.

A method of assigning a feature service to the line of a subscriber of a telecommunications network during the network's administration operation. The first step of the method is executing, at a predefined point during the administration, a first data operation to determine whether the assignment of a respective feature service is blocked by a currently assigned feature service. Thereafter, the method executes a second data operation to determine whether the assignment of the respective feature service requires the prior assignment of another feature service. The method then assigns the feature service to the subscriber line upon determining that the feature service is not blocked and that any required feature services are already assigned to the line.

A telephone services functionality (250-1,--250-N) is disposed in a telecommunications network (200) to ensure that a telephone call is processed in accordance with the telephone services respectively subscribed to by the calling (e.g. S1) and called (e.g. S2) parties. In addition, the functionality retains control over the call so that it may respond to service requests entered by either the calling or called party at any point following establishment of the call connection.

A system for creating and modifying intelligent telephone network call processing logic trees which can be customized for individual customers and created in a user-friendly visual environment (10, 15, Fig. 3-5). Service primitives are defined as logical graph nodes (20, Fig. 2, Fig. 3) which can be visually assembled into logic trees (Fig. 5) which represent the service logic flow and which provide default values for all service options. Higher level nodes, assembled from a plurality of service primitives, can likewise be defined and stored (12, 13, 19) for later use as entities in defining yet further call processing logic trees. These call processing logic trees are interpreted to allow the service control point computers (17) to implement the services in the switched telephone network (18) by sequentially executing the specified call processing primitives. A library (12, 13, 19) of defined nodes and defined node assemblies which represent service features can thus be made available to permit graphical manipulation into complete logic trees representing new services. These logic trees are then interpreted by generic programs in the service control point to actually provide the described services.

An outbound call management capability is provided for a public switched telephone network (26) by a network based outbound call management (NOCM) complex (52) which can be accessed by all subscribers (12,14,16,18,20) to the public switched network through one or more central offices (22,28,34,38,42) in the network. A predetermined list of telephone numbers is stored in a data base (60) in the NOCM complex (52) for each subscriber who uses the NOCM services. The telephone numbers are automatically dialed at one or more predetermined scheduled times. When one of the dialed telephones is answered, the NOCM complex sets up a connection through the public switched telephone network between the called party and one or more attendants at one or more telephone numbers specified by a customer of the NOCM services. The NOCM services are made available to any subscriber of the public switched telephone network by provision of a special access code which permits a subscriber who is a customer of this service to dial the NOCM complex which will then interact with the customer by responding to voice or DTMF commands from the customer. The customer may program the list of telephone numbers to be called and program the telephone phone numbers to be used by the NOCM system to connect awaiting attendants with parties automatically called by the NOCM system. The NOCM system customer may set the time for the execution of his calling program by the NOCM system, and may interrupt or otherwise influence or change the execution of his program. All of this may be accomplished without a need to purchase expensive outbound call management premises equipment or to retain the services of a special provider of outbound call management services.

A method is described for routing calls outside of a carriers network based on characteristics of the call, the attributes of the caller, the status of subscriberprovided resource, and the status of network telephone provided facilities. Information about the call and the caller's identification is sent from the public switched telephone network (100) to a subscriber call routing processor. The carrier is directed by the routing processor to route the call to the subscriber's resource (108, 109, 110) best able to handle the call. Information about the call and the business relationship the caller has with the subscriber is used by the routing processor to determine which type of resource is needed to handle the call. The routing processor then chooses the particular resource (108, 109, 110) of that type to which the call is to be routed based on the current status of the resource, the status of the network-provided facilities, and the criteria established by the subscriber for selecting between alternative resources. Resource types may include any PSTN terminations, including automatic call distributors, audio response units, modems, and individual stations. The routing processor may also send information to the carrier to be delivered to the subscriber resource to assist in handling the call.

An adjunct call processor connected to a communications network for providing call processing services. The network includes a switching system including a switch for concurrently servicing a plurality of communications paths and a switch controller for controlling the switch, the switch controller being responsive to switching commands communicated to it. The adjunct call processor is coupled to the switching system for (i) automatically receiving a call from a caller which has been switched to the adjunct call processor by the switching system, (ii) interacting with the caller, and (iii) based on that interaction, transmitting one or more of the switching commands to the switching system causing the call to be handled by the switching system externally of the adjunct call processor.

In the present invention, a first agent terminal, of a group of multi-windowing agent terminals, (14-1;14-N) answers an integrated voice/data call by (i) directly receiving and displaying call-related information from a communication system in a "Phone" window, and (ii) retrieving data information from a host database system (18,19), and then transferring the voice portion and either (a) predetermined received call-related information, or (b) a current data display status indication directly to a second agent terminal of a second group of agent terminals. The second agent terminal uses the received data to access a same or other host database system for automatically displaying the pertinent data at the second agent terminal to continue the voice and data call.
