A process for making interchangeable connectors (1, 2) for cables consisting of ribbon-joined optical fibres (3, 4), involves the manufacture, by mechanical working, of a punch (10) provided with several parallel ridges (12, 13) of dihedral form, symmetrically disposed relative to a middle plane passing through a longitudinal axis (a) of the punch, the mechanical working including at least a grinding step for the parallel ridges (12, 13) in which corresponding ridges are worked in succession by rotating the punch (10) about its longitudinal axis (a); several plates (5) of metallic material having respective grooves (8, 6) corresponding to the the punch ridges (12, 13) are then pressed by plastic deformation; the fiber ends of an optical fiber ribbon (3, 4) are next clamped between two plates (5), at least one of which is manufactured by means of the punch (10), and fastened in place by an adhesive material; afterwards the outlet surface of the fibres (3, 4) is ground and at least an alignment plug (9) is introduced into a corresponding hole defined by at least a groove (8) of a grooved plate (5). The invention also relates to a punch (10) made following the described process and a connector (1, 2) for ribbon-joined optical fibres (3,4) obtained by the same process.

This invention employs a carrier (10) upon which a thin conductive film (12) has been applied. The conductive film is of a metallic material which exhibits a surface energy such that it is not readily wetted by solder. A patterned mask (14) is disposed on the conductive film, with the mask having openings which expose selected areas (16, 18) of the conductive film. Solder is deposited in the mask openings and is weakly adherent to the exposed areas of the conductive film. The carrier is then disposed over and in registration with conductive land areas (20, 22) of a circuit carrier (24), such that the solder in the mask openings is aligned with the land areas of the circuit carrier. Subsequently, the carrier and circuit land areas are brought into contact, heated, the solder bonded to the lands, and the carrier is lifted away for subsequent reuse. In another species of the invention, a thin film layer of solder is directly deposited on and weakly adherent to a flexible base layer. Subsequently, tool means which registers with the areas to be soldered, presses the base layer/solder combination against the areas to be coated with solder, thereby causing the solder to adhere to the underlying circuit configuration.

The present invention relates to electrolytic cathode assemblies typically used in the refining or winning of metals and to methods of manufacturing and using same. The cathode assembly comprises an electrically conductive hanger bar and a deposition plate attached along an upper end to the hanger bar to define a joint. The cathode assembly further comprises a protective covering having lateral edges and surrounding the hanger bar and a portion of the upper end of the deposition plate so as to substantially enclose the joint and to leave end portions of the hanger bar exposed outside of the lateral edges of the protective covering. Each end of the protective covering includes a corrosion resistant material positioned to form a substantially continuous seal between the protective covering and the hanger bar, thereby to at least hinder fluid flow into the protective covering. Methods of manufacturing and using the electrolytic cathode assemblies are also described.

A lead connector assembly having an open and a closed end, and one or more electrically conducting contact rings spaced apart by at least one electrically insulating ring forming a ring stack. Each contact ring includes an electrically conducting pin protruding from the respective contact ring, and an electrically insulating end ring accommodated at the end of the ring stack at the open end. The inner surfaces of: the one or more contact rings; the at least one insulating ring; and the end ring, define a lead aperture starting at the open end. Connector housing parts enclose the contact rings, the at least one insulating ring and the end ring, and form an outer surface and are joined such that a hermetic seal is provided between the lead aperture and the outer surface. The electrically conducting pin of each contact ring projects through the joined connector housing parts and from the outer surface.
