The present invention describes methods to image amyloid beta in the retina of the eye in such a way as to diagnose and potentially treat Alzheimer's disease. The preferred apparatus to perform the image and treatment is described. The basic idea is to use an imaging method to characterize the depth location of amyloid beta (hereafter referred to as A&bgr;) in the retina, to classify and characterize the type of deposit, to quantify the amount present and thereby to diagnose Alzheimer's disease and stage the disease. The methods describe herein include image guided treatment of A&bgr; deposits in the retina.

In some embodiments, there are methods for diagnosing a pain generator or a suspected pain generator in a patient suffering from back pain, the methods comprise labeling an inflammatory, vascular, neuronal, and/or metabolic pain marker at a location inside of or adjacent to an intervertebral disc in the patient suffering from back pain to increase an image of the pain marker with an imaging procedure; and imaging the labeled inflammatory, vascular, neuronal, and/or metabolic pain marker in a manner sufficient to diagnose the pain generator or suspected pain generator.

In one embodiment, a patient and one or more medical professionals involved with treating the patient can electronically access a comprehensive treatment planning, support, and review system. The system can provide recommendations regarding diagnosis, non-surgical treatment, surgical treatment, and recovery from the surgical treatment based on data gathered from the patient and the medical professional(s). The system can manage the tracking of multiple patients, thereby allowing for data comparison between similar aspects of medical treatments and for learning over time through continual data gathering, analysis, and assimilation to decision-making algorithms.
