The invention provides a process for producing porous carbon by embedding inorganic nanoparticles into a carbon-containing matrix and then reacting them with a halogen gas. By virtue of the size of the nanoparticles used, the process according to the invention advantageously enables precise control of the pore size and the pore size distribution of the resulting carbon materials. The porous carbon produced by the process advantageously contains micropores and preferably mesopores of defined size, and finds use in chemistry, medicine and electrical engineering, and is especially suitable as an adsorbent, filtration material and electrode material, for example in lithium batteries.

A porous adsorbent structure that is capable of a reversible adsorption and desorption cycle for capturing CO 2 from a gas mixture comprises a support matrix formed by a web of surface modified cellulose nanofibers. The support matrix has a porosity of at least 20%. The surface modified cellulose nanofibers consist of cellulose nanofibers having a diameter of about 4 nm to about 1000 nm and a length of about 1 µm or more that are covered with a coupling agent being covalently bound to the surface thereof. The coupling agent comprises at least one monoalkyldialkoxyaminosilane.

The invention provides networked polymeric nanofibers having a structure in which amorphous polymeric fibers are branched at multiple sites and having a diameter of 100 nanometers or less. A solution of a polymer such as polystyrene in a good solvent thereof is rapidly frozen to form a nanoscale phase-separation structure of the polymer and the frozen solvent. The networked polymeric nanofibers can then be obtained upon removing the frozen solvent.
