A method of conducting a droplet operation using the device comprises: positioning a first droplet (634) comprising one or more magnetically responsive beads on one or more electrodes (622) from the first set, so that the beads are attracted by the magnetic field; positioning a second droplet comprising one or more magnetically responsive beads on one or more electrodes from the second set, so that the beads are not attracted by the magnetic field; and conducting a droplet operation on the first droplet and/or the second droplet.
