A power switchover apparatus for a hybrid vehicle is provided which can perform power switchover smoothly with a simple and relatively lightweight configuration. The switchover apparatus has a starting clutch (40) between an engine crankshaft (22) of an engine (20) and an automatic transmission (23), a one-way clutch (44) between the automatic transmission and a drive shaft (60), and a drive motor (21b) connected to said drive shaft (60). On starting, the one-way clutch is idle, and is later connected to switch over the power source to the engine. The switchover apparatus also has target rotational speed setting means (7a) for setting a target rotational speed of the engine (Ne) when the power source is to be switched from motor to engine, and control means (7b,7c) for controlling the engine rotational speed and the transmission ratio of the automatic transmission in response to the target rotational speed.

The inventive method involves the use of: a power transmission device (1) comprising an electric machine (4) which is connected to (i) the heat engine by means of a clutch (3) and (ii) a wheel (6) axle shaft (12); and a starting system (31) which is mechanically independent of the electric machine (4) and which is connected to the heat engine (2). The technique of the invention is applied to a motor vehicle where an engine and a first motor are linked to a driveshaft via a planetary gear mechanism, a second motor is linked to the driveshaft via a transmission, and a battery is arranged to receive and transmit electric power from and to the first motor and the second motor. In response to a deviation of the charge-discharge state of the battery from an allowable control range set as an allowable charge state range of the battery during an upshift, gear change control of the invention sets a gearshift condition change flag F1 to 1 (step S360) and sets a value N2 having a smaller absolute value than a value N1 to a target rotation speed change &Dgr;Nm2* of the second motor (step S380). The gear change control then sets a hydraulic pressure command Pb1* of a brake B1 included in the transmission to make an actual rotation speed change &Dgr;Nm2 of the second motor approach to the target rotation speed change &Dgr;Nm2* (step S400). This arrangement reduces a rate of change in rotation speed Nm2 of the second motor. The reduced rate of change in rotation speed Nm2 prevents a continuous decrease or a continuous increase in power consumption of the second motor that is caused by, for example, delayed detection, delayed computation, and delayed communication, thus effectively protecting the battery from excessive power input and excessive power output.

In a vehicle, it is determined whether a driver has requested increased driving force based on an accelerator opening degree. If the driver has requested increased driving force, a vehicle speed at the time of the request for increased driving force is derived. Three-dimensional map which corresponds to different vehicle speed and which shows a predetermined relationship of the accelerator opening degree (Acc), the vehicle speed and a required torque are then used to set the required torque. The maps are set such that the required torque increases with respect to the accelerator opening degree when the vehicle speed is low. Further, the maps are set such that when the vehicle speed is high, (i) even if the accelerator opening degree changes a little, the required driving force does not change a large amount, and (ii) the required driving force remains substantially constant when the vehicle speed is in a high speed region. By adopting this configuration, the driver's request is closely correlated with the vehicle speed at the time of the request for increased driving force, and thus the vehicle can be driven with a driving force that accords with the driver's request.

A power distributing mechanism 16, which is provided with a differential-state switching device in the form of a switching clutch C0 and a switching brake B0, is switchable by the switching device between a differential state (continuously-variable shifting state) in which the mechanism is operable as an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission, and a fixed-speed-ratio shifting state in which the mechanism is operable as a transmission having a fixed speed ratio or ratios. The power distributing mechanism 16 is placed in the fixed-speed-ratio shifting state during a high-speed running of the vehicle or a high-speed operation of engine 8, so that the output of the engine 8 is transmitted to drive wheels 38 primarily through a mechanical power transmitting path, whereby fuel economy of the vehicle is improved owing to reduction of a loss of conversion of a mechanical energy into an electric energy. The mechanism 16 is also placed in the fixed-speed-ratio shifting state during a high-output operation of the engine 8, so that the required electric reaction of first electric motor M1 can be reduced, whereby the required size of the first electric motor M1, and the required size of the drive system 10 including the electric motor M1 can be reduced.

The invention relates to a transmission, control units for that transmission on a vehicle using the same. The object of the invention is to provide a less expensive active transmission control system for an automobile, capable of disconnecting an engine (1), without increasing the number of dog clutches. In an active shift transmission, a second intermediate shaft (53) is provided between a transmission input shaft (36) connected with an engine (1) and a transmission output shaft (3), and the transmission ratio is determined by the product of gear ratios of two sets of transmission gears. Further, a differential gear box (31) is connected between both intermediate shafts (39, 53) and a motor (5) is connected to the third shaft of this differential gear box (31), so that the engine torque is borne by the motor (5) on a temporary basis, whereby active transmission is performed. When the transmission gear of the input shaft (36) is released, the engine rotation loss at the time of regenerative braking can be eliminated by disconnecting the engine (1).
