The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for controlling a car equipped with an automatic transmission having a lockup clutch. According to the control method of the present invention, when the lockup clutch is in the lockup state, a variation of a generated torque is detected. When the range of the torque variation detected exceeds a predetermined value, an engine torque is reduced by controlling the engine, and the automatic transmission is controlled to compensate for a reduction of the driving torque due to a reduction of the engine torque. Thus, the speed change ratio is changed to the low gear side. The control unit of the present invention includes a unit (5) for controlling an output torque of an engine (2) according to a command value, a unit (8) for changing the transmission ratio of the automatic transmission, a unit (3) for detecting a variation of the engine torque, a unit (7) for deciding a target driving torque, a unit (4) for reducing a torque command value when the range of a detected variation of the torque has exceeded a predetermined value when the lockup clutch was in the lockup state, and a unit (4) for deciding a transmission ratio at which the reduction of the driving torque due to the reduction of the engine torque is compensated for.

The invention relates to a transmission system in a vehicle using a motor to transmit power which can assist acceleration by generating auxiliary engine power during acceleration in addition to gear changing by the motor. In this system, however, the acceleration assistance is interrupted in gear changing since the motor power is used to drive a vehicle when a gear-shifting is made. In a conventional geared transmission mechanism, the torque decreases after a gear change for up-shifting is made. If acceleration assistance is added, the torque reduction in shifting becomes greater and gives uncomfortable shocks and feelings to the driver. At a torque converter characteristic assuming unit, during non gear shift, gear ratio and an input shaft torque are assumed and also during gear shift, accessory torque is assumed. So as to correct the accessory torque a deviation between pump torque and engine torque is learned and this value is given to the accessory torque, thereby the input shaft torque can be executed and assumed. A drive shaft torque is obtained from a drive shaft torque calculating unit, a control period of the drive shaft torque is determined, a reference drive shaft torque is determined during torque control period from a reference drive shaft torque setting unit. A deviation between the reference drive shaft torque and the drive shaft torque is obtained from a torque deviation executing unit. An engine controlling unit varies the engine torque by controlling an ignition period so as to decrease substantially zero the deviation.
