A method for joining a device to an object with the aid of a combination of ultrasonic vibration energy and induction heating, wherein the device includes a portion of a thermoplastic polymer and a susceptor additive wherein this portion is at least partly liquefied or plasticized through the ultrasonic vibration energy in combination with the induction heating and wherein the joining includes establishing a connection between the device and the object which connection is at least one of a positive fit connection, a weld, a press fit connection, and an adhesive connection. The induction heating is applied for rendering the device portion suitable for absorption of ultrasonic vibration energy than other device portions by raising its temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The ultrasonic vibration energy is used for liquefying or at least plasticizing the thermoplastic polymer of the named device portion.

The invention concerns an apparatus for manufacturing of containers from blanks of a cardboard based material, said apparatus comprising: a container body forming unit configured to form a cylindrical container body from a substantially plane blank of a multilayer material comprising at least a supporting cardboard layer and a weldable layer; a welding unit configured to fasten an end closure to the container body, said welding unit comprising an inductive welding energy generator for melting of the weldable layer; and transporting means configured to transport a flow of body blanks to the container body forming unit, to transport a flow of container bodies from the container body forming unit to the welding unit, and to transport a flow of container bodies provided with end closures from the welding unit. The invention is characterized in that the transporting means comprises: a first movable gripping arrangement configured to grip at least two container bodies and move these container bodies simultaneously to the welding unit; and a transferring and positioning arrangement configured to transfer container bodies from the container body forming unit to the first movable gripping arrangement and to position the container bodies in a controlled manner to ensure that the first movable gripping arrangement can grip the at least two container bodies properly, wherein the welding unit is configured to simultaneously fasten an end closure to each of the at least two container bodies. The invention also concerns a method for operating an apparatus of the above type.

A method for bonding thermoplastic substrates is provided. A thin, porous, resistive heater is provided between layers of thermoplastic substrates to be bonded in the absence of an adhesive. The fabric heater is in intimate contact with the substrates at the joint by application of pressure. When the heater is energized, the thermoplastic material at the joint is melted or softened, and becomes uniformly distributed in the weld. After cooling, the fabric heater remains within the weld area and provides increased reinforcement to the weld bond.

A susceptor composition that can bond two or more layers or substrates to one another and that can be used to coat a cut substrate. The susceptor composition is activated in the presence of radio frequency (RF) energy. In one embodiment, the susceptor composition of the present invention comprises a susceptor and a carrier. The carrier and susceptor are blended with one another and form a mixture, preferably a uniform mixture. The susceptor is present in an amount effective to allow the susceptor composition to be heated by RF energy. In a preferred embodiment, the susceptor also functions as an adhesive. The susceptor is an ionic or polar compound and acts as either a charge-carrying or an oscillating/vibrating component of the susceptor composition. The susceptor generates thermal energy in the presence of an RF electromagnetic or electrical field (hereafter RF field). According to the present invention, the susceptor can be an inorganic salt (or its respective hydrate), such as stannous chloride (SnCl2) or lithium perchlorate (LiC1O4), or an organic salt, such as lithium acetate (LiC2H3O2). The susceptor can be a non-ferromagnetic ionic salt. The susceptor can also be a polymeric ionic compound ("ionomer") which preferably also functions as an adhesive and/or coating. Under RF power levels of about 0.5 kilowatt (kW) to 1kW, and frequencies of about 1 to 100 MHz, the susceptor composition of the present invention facilitates the bonding of single layers of polymeric materials such as polyolefins, non-polyolefins, and non-polymeric materials, as well as multilayer stacks of these materials.

The thermoformable polymer of the adherent layer comprises either a crystalline polymer having a melting point at least 10°C below that of the first layer, or is an amorphous polymer having a glass transition temperature which is at least 10°C lower than the melting point of the polymer of the first layer, or is an amorphous polymer which may be crystallisable in a subsquent annealing process. The adherent layer is applied to the first layer at a temperature above the melting point of the thermoformable polymer of the first layer.
