The filter can be made by forming a porous article from refractory particles, e.g. refractory oxide, carbide or graphite, and a carbon-rich binder, e.g. tar, pitch or an organic (preferably aromatic) polymer that degrades to form carbon on pyrolysis, and then firing the porous article to generate the carbon matrix in which the refractory particles are embedded. The porous article is preferably made by coating a reticulated polyurethane foam with binder and refractory particles, and firing at preferably no higher than 800 DEG C.

The invention relates to a friction or slip body which consists of at least two composite materials, reinforced with fibre bundles and containing a ceramic matrix. A first composite material acts as a friction layer, forming the exterior of the slip body and a second composite material forms a support body which is in surface contact with the friction layer. The length of the fibre bundles of the friction layer is significantly shorter than the length of the fibre bundles of the support body. The bundles of fibres of the friction layer have a defined orientation that is perpendicular to the surface. The surface of the friction layer essentially has only small areas of a maximum 1.2 mm diameter of exposed carbon and the total proportion of exposed carbon on the surface is at maximum 35 %. The surface has a structure of extremely fine fissures and the friction layer has practically no tension close to the surface.

The invention relates to a method for producing carbon-combined fireproof products consisting of fireproof grains and an organic binding agent. According to said method, a powdery coaltar pitch that can be graphited and has a benzo(a)pyrene content of less than 500 mg/kg and a coke residue of at least approximately 80 wt. % according to DIN 51905, and a binding agent that is liquid at room temperature, can be graphited and has a coke residue of at least approximately 15 wt. % and a benzo[a]pyrene content of less than 500 ppm according to DIN 51905, are combined to form an organic binding agent. Said organic binding agent is mixed with the remaining constituents, transferred into a moulded body, and then heat-treated at a temperature of between 150 and approximately 400 °C.
