A novel process for producing alcohols, characterized by reacting an organic halide represented by the formula R-X (wherein R means an organic residue and X means a halogen atom) with oxygen molecules in the presence of an organotin compound and a reducing agent and optionally in the presence of a free-radical initiator in an amount up to 0.3 equivalent based on the organic halide to obtain an alcohol represented by the general formula R-OH (wherein R has the same meaning as the above).
