PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binuclear metal complex which hardly loses its catalytic activity even in the presence of a strong acid or at an elevated temperature and is useful as a redox reaction catalyst etc. SOLUTION: The binuclear metal complex is synthesized by the reaction formulas shown in the figure or the like. The binuclear metal complex is excellent in heat resistance and acid resistance. Since the deterioration of the catalytic activity of the binuclear metal complex is suppressed, even in the presence of a strong acid or at an elevated temperature, it is capable of serving as a catalyst with a wide application and is thus commercially useful. NEW MATERIAL:The tetraazaannulene.cobalt complex of formula (c) (R 1 WR 3 are H or 1W8C alkoxy, provided that at least one of R 1 WR 3 is 5W8C alkoxy). USE: An oxygen reducing catalyst having long catalytic life and improved activity, and useful as a catalyst substituting for the platinum catalyst having problems of cost and resources. PROCESS: The compound of formula (c) can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula (a) with cobalt acetate and the compound of formula (b) in dimethylformamide in argon gas stream under heat refluxing.
