The low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp has a light-transmitting discharge vessel (2) enclosing, in a gastight manner, a discharge space (1) provided with a filling of mercury and a rare gas. The discharge vessel comprises discharge means (8) for maintaining a discharge in the discharge space (1). The discharge vessel comprises dispenser means (20) for controllably dispensing hydrogen into the discharge space. The hydrogen gas pressure is in the range between 10−3 Pa and 10 Pa. Preferably, the hydrogen gas pressure is in the range between 10−2 Pa and 1 Pa. A low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp with a good maintenance is obtained.

Cesium dispensers are produced based on the use of a mixture of at least one reducing agent and at least one cesium compound selected among molybdate, tungstate, niobate, tantalate, silicate and zirconate. The cesium dispensers are useful in the production of OLED-type screens.

A process is provided for production of a refrigerating circuit comprising non-evaporable getter material, wherein said getter material, previously introduced into the same circuit, is heated to a temperature of at least 200° C. during or immediately after the circuit evacuating step, at a residual atmospheric gas pressure of not less than 10 mbar, before introduction of the mixture of cooling fluids and before the circuit sealing. Preferred is the use of zirconium-based getter alloys.

The present invention discloses metallic fiber boards having catalytic functionality and processes for producing the same. The boards are formed from a mesh of metallic fibers, each fiber having a first layer of an oxide and a second layer of a porous oxide. A catalyst, either disposed on the surface of the second layer, or dispersed within the second layer, provides catalytic functionality to the fiber board. The first layer is produced by thermal oxidation of the metallic fibers, while the second layer and catalyst are produced by thermal decomposition of precursor materials applied to the fiber board while in solution, typically as a spray of atomized droplets. The resulting boards are used to catalyze the combustion of hydrocarbons, especially methane, and particularly in household boilers.

A process for producing a field emitter flat display includes providing a supported porous layer of a non-evaporable getter material by depositing the non-evaporable getter material on a substrate followed by sintering the deposited material. The substrate having the porous layer of non-evaporable getter material thereon is then housed in an inner space defined by opposing plates. The inner space is then evacuated and hermetically sealed. The non-evaporable getter material is preferably deposited by preparing a suspension of non-evaporable getter material particles in a suspending medium, coating a surface of a substrate with the suspension by, e.g., spraying, and sintering the coating.

The process of the present invention provides for the sorption of residual gas in a vessel by means of a non-activated, non-evaporated barium getter. It comprises the steps of reducing an alloy of Ba.sub.z +(Ba.sub.1-x A.sub.x).sub.n B.sub.m to a particle size of less than 5 mm, under vacuum or an inert gas atmosphere and then placing the particulate alloy in the vessel. Upon exposing the particulate alloy to the residual gas in the vessel at room temperature the gas is sorbed. The metal A is a metal selected from the group consisting of elements of Group IIa of the periodic table of elements, excluding barium. The metal B is selected from the group consisting of elements of Group Ib, IIb, IIIa, IVa and Va of the periodic table of elements. Furthermore n=1, 2, 3 or 4 and m=1, 2 or 5, whereas o.ltoreq..times..ltoreq.0.5 and z is a value from zero to such a value that the total barium in the alloy is less than 95% by weight of the alloy.

An integrated capacitive device has a thin-film capacitor formed of first and second electrode layers, electrically separated by a dielectric layer formed of a hydrogen-degradable compound. To protect the dielectric layer from degradation due to hydrogen diffusion, at least one layer of a getter material is provided, selected from alloys of zirconium, vanadium and iron, optionally containing minor quantities of manganese and/or a rare earth group element, and alloys of zirconium with at least one metal of the group of iron, cobalt and nickel, optionally containing up to about 15% by weight of elements of the rare earth group.

A powder of a composite material comprising a non-evaporable getter material with a palladium coating continuously sorbs hydrogen. Embodiments in which the coverage of the palladium coating over the particles of the NEG material is complete can sorb hydrogen without the need for an activation treatment. Other embodiments in which the palladium coverage is less than total but greater than about 10% can also sorb gaseous species other than hydrogen. Loose powders, pressed powders, and sintered powders of the composite material are incorporated into getter devices and into the evacuated spaces of double-walled pipes, dewars, and thermal bottles. Methods for preparing powders of these composite materials utilize evaporative, sputter, and CVD deposition techniques. Another method prepares powders of the composite material by a liquid phase impregnation process.

Compositions containing getter material and getter devices for which gettering activity can be activated at applied temperatures that are lower than those temperatures required for activating the getter material alone are disclosed. In one aspect, a getter composition that includes a getter component and an activator component is provided. The getter component is selected from the group consisting of evaporable and non-evaporable getter materials. The activator component is effective to heat said getter material to a temperature greater than about 500.degree. C. when said activator material is heated to a temperature of between about 280.degree. C. and about 500.degree. C. In some embodiments, the activator component is effective to bring the temperature of the getter material to greater than about 1,000.degree. C. These materials can be used in devices and locations for which low applied activation temperatures are required.
