Hydroxy-functional poly(amide-ethers) are fabricated into articles such as rigid containers and flexible films exhibiting high barrier to oxygen transmission in both dry and moist environments. For example, a polymer prepared by reacting the diglycidyl ether of 4,4'-isopropylidene bisphenol with .alpha.,.alpha.'-bis(4-hydroxybenzamido)-1,3-xylene exhibits especially high barrier.

Thermoplastic hydroxy ether polymers containing inertly substituted or unsubstituted stilbene and ether linkages in the backbone chain and pendant hydroxyl moieties are prepared by reacting (a) an inertly substituted or unsubstituted dihydroxy-stilbene with (b) a diglycidyl ether and, optionally, (c) a difunctional monomer under conditions sufficient to cause the hydroxyl moieties to react with the epoxy moieties to form ether linkages and pendant hydroxyl moieties. The polymers exhibit excellent oxygen barrier properties and are useful in packaging oxygen-sensitive materials.

Poly(hydroxy ethers) are prepared by reacting a dihydric phenol with a diepoxide in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of bis(trihydrocarbylphosphoranylidene)ammonium salt, bis[tris(dihydrocarbylamino)phosphoranylidene]ammonium salt, and tetrakis[tris(dihydrocarbylamino)phosphoranylideneamino]phosphonium salt. The reaction between the dihydric phenol and the diepoxide is conducted in an ether or hydroxy ether solvent at a temperature sufficiently high to produce a poly(hydroxy ether). Polymers prepared by the new process are more highly branched than those produced by known methods.

Hydroxy-functionalized polyethers having imide groups in their backbones are prepared by contacting an imide-containing bisphenol with the diglycidyl ether of the same or another bisphenol under conditions sufficient to cause the nucleophilic phenolic hydroxyl moieties to react with epoxy groups. These poly(hydroxy ether imides) possess a combination of high barrier to oxygen transmission (i.e., oxygen transmission rates of less than 10.0 cm.sup.3 -mil/100 in.sup.2 -atm-day) and high heat resistance (i.e., T.sub.g above 120.degree. C.). These polymers are suitable for use in the manufacture of packaging materials with high barrier to oxygen.

A laminate structure comprises one or more layers of a polyester and one or more layers of a hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer. The laminate structure can be prepared by coextruding one or more layers of a polyester and one or more layers of a hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer. The laminate structure can be fabricated into articles using conventional fabrication techniques such as compression molding, injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, solvent casting, calendering and thermoforming.
