Abstract: A head mounted display (HMD) device periodically measures a gamma characteristic of each of a plurality of display panels, then adjusts the characteristic of one of the panels to closely match the other. For example, the HMD device can periodically apply a set of currents to selected pixels at each display panel and measure the resulting sets of voltages at the selected pixels. The set of voltages for each display panel indicates the gamma characteristic of the corresponding panel. The HMD device can apply the sets of voltages to a filter to generate a gamma figure of merit (FOM) for each display panel, and adjust a bias (e.g., a backlight bias or a bias of a light emitting diode (LED)) of one or more of the display panels, so that each display panel exhibits similar gamma characteristics.

Abstract: A method includes receiving an optical signal from an external network at a first optical terminal affixed to an external side of a substantially transparent surface of a building. The first optical terminal includes a first fiber port configured to receive a first optical fiber and an output lens optically coupled to the first fiber port. The first fiber port is configured to route the optical signal from the external network to first optical terminal. The method also includes directing the optical signal through an optical link extending through the substantially transparent surface to a second optical terminal affixed to an interior side of the substantially transparent surface. The second optical terminal includes an input lens and a second fiber port optically coupled to the input lens. The input lens is configured to receive the optical signal from the first optical terminal through the optical link.

Abstract: A method includes receiving packets of data from an external network and receiving location information over a wireless communication link from a wireless communication device located inside a building. The location information indicates a relative location of the wireless communication device. The method also includes executing beam forming with the wireless communication device based on the received location information to form a communication beam directed toward the wireless communication device. The method also includes transmitting the communication beam over the wireless communication link from the external network interface unit to the wireless communication device, the communication beam containing the data packets.

Abstract: A hybrid display includes a first display having a first interface and a second display having a second interface. A third interface is configured to receive a first command that includes a first value indicating a modification of pixels in the hybrid display. A finite state machine is configured to translate the first value to a second value indicating a modification of pixels in the first display and a third value indicating a modification of pixels in the second display. The first interface transmits a second command including the second value to the first interface and a third command including the third value to the second interface. The first and second commands are transmitted at times determined by a relative delay between the first display and the second display.

Abstract: An HMD device includes a display panel and an x-prism beamsplitter disposed along a first axis between the display panel and an expected position of an eye of a user. The x-prism beamsplitter directs a first light beam in a first direction from the display panel to the eye along the first axis, directs a second light beam in a second direction along a second axis substantially perpendicular to the first axis, and directs a third light beam in the second direction along the second axis, wherein the second light beam is representative of the first light beam and the third light beam is representative of a reflection of the first light beam off of the eye. The HMD device further includes an imaging camera to capture a composite image comprising a combination of both a representation of the second light beam and a representation of the third light beam.

Abstract: An HMD device encodes different portions of an image for display with different encoding characteristics based on a user's predicted area of focus as indicated by one or more of a pose of the HMD device and a gaze direction of the user's eye(s) identified at the HMD device. By employing different encoding characteristics, the HMD device supports relatively high-quality encoding while maintaining a relatively small size of the encoded image to allow for transfer of the image to a display panel at a high frame rate. Thus, the HMD device can encode a portion of the image that is expected to be in the user's area of focus at a high resolution, and encode the portion of the image that is expected to be in the user's peripheral vision at a lower resolution.
