Abstract:
A lubricant or fuel composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricant or fuel and a minor proportion of a compound of formula wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical having at least 6 carbon atoms, the R1's (same or different) are hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or a metallic or nonmetallic cationic radical, and the X's (same or different) are oxygen or sulphur. Specified cationic radicals include alkaline earth metals, Zn, Sn, Pb, Cd, Al and organic amine radicals. The additives may be used in amounts of about 0,1 to 25%, preferably about 0,5 to 5,0% by weight of the total composition. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic. A phenolic anti-oxidant, specifically p, p1-methylene bisphenol may be present.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula where R is an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical having at least 6 carbon atoms, the R1's (same or different) are hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or metallic or non-metallic cationic radicals, e.g. organic ammonium radicals, and the X's (same or different) are oxygen or sulphur. Specified metals are alkaline earth metals, Zn, Pb, Sn, Cd and Al. They may be prepared by reacting an alkyl or cycloalkyl mercaptan or mercaptide with a halomethylphosphono compound Hal-CH2-P(X)(XR1)2 and if desired interconverting the resulting salts, free acids or esters. In addition to compounds falling within the above general formula the Specification specifically refers to compounds in which R is phenyl and benzyl. All these compounds are used as additives for lubricants or fuels (see Group III).
