Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for controlling a vehicle (100) during a downhill start. The vehicle comprises a service brake (131a, 131b; 132a, 132b; 33a, 133b), an engine (119) and a transmission (120) being arranged between the engine and at least one driven axle (123), wherein the service brakes, the engine and the transmission are controlled by an electronic control unit (140). The method involves registering that the vehicle is located on a downhill gradient; registering an action from the driver, indicating a request to start the vehicle; controlling the service brake to maintain the vehicle stationary during a predetermined time after the request before initiating a controlled service brake release; controlling a gradual release of the service brake in response to at least one detected first vehicle operating parameter; and releasing the service brake when detecting that a predetermined threshold for at least one second vehicle operating parameter has been attained.

Abstract: A device and a method for controlling vehicle speed in a vehicle equipped with cruise control while traveling downhill. The method involves driving a vehicle downhill with the cruise control set to a brake speed; detecting a current vehicle speed; applying the auxiliary brake to maintain the brake speed; detecting a request for a downshift from a current gear to a lower gear; and determining if a downshift is permissible at the current speed. If a downshift is not permissible, then a control unit automatically applies the service brakes to retard the vehicle speed; retarding the vehicle from a current speed to a lower speed at which a downshift to a lower gear is permissible; and performing a downshift to a lower gear when the second vehicle speed is reached. The cruise control is set to a second brake speed lower than the first brake speed.

Abstract: A control method is provided for a powertrain in a vehicle, the powertrain including an engine mechanically connected to a gearbox and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), wherein the method includes allowing an extraordinary gear shift in spite of a first torque comparison indicating an expected engine output torque demand above a first general limit for allowed output torque associated with the extraordinary gear shift provided that: a second torque comparison indicates that the expected engine output torque demand after the extraordinary gear shift is within the limits of a second temporarily increased allowed engine output torque limit; and an extraordinary gear shift criteria is fulfilled indicating a gear shift is allowed the criteria being dependent on at least one parameter chosen among estimated fuel efficiency, engine efficiency, expected future torque demand, time of running the engine above the general engine torque limit and engine temperature.

Abstract: A cruise control arrangement is provided with a cruise control speed function and where the cruise control arrangement is provided with a set cruise speed value and a set brake cruise speed value, and where the cruise control brake function is active when the vehicle travels downhill, where the cruise control arrangement is adapted to activate at least one auxiliary brake when the vehicle speed reaches the set brake cruise speed, to apply a service brake of the vehicle in order to reduce the speed of the vehicle to a predefined first speed if the vehicle speed exceeds the set brake cruise speed when the least one auxiliary brake is delivering full brake power, where the predefined first speed is lower than the set brake cruise speed. Undesired acceleration during downhill travel can be avoided when the brake power of the auxiliary brake is not sufficient. Further, a required downshift can be delayed, which will improve the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
