A nitrided packaging steel in the form of a flat steel product and method for producing a nitrided packaging steel with a carbon content of 10-1000 ppm and uncombined nitrogen, dissolved in the steel, of more than 100 ppm. The nitriding is performed in two stages: a first stage, in which a molten steel is nitrided to a nitrogen content of at most 160 ppm by introducing a nitrogen-containing gas and/or a nitrogen-containing solid into the molten steel, and a second stage, in which a flat steel product produced from the nitrided molten steel by cold rolling is treated with a nitrogen-containing gas in order to increase further the amount of uncombined nitrogen in the flat steel product. The second stage is performed in an annealing furnace, in which the flat steel product is at the same time annealed in a recrystallizing manner. The packaging steels produced are distinguished by great strength, in excess of 600 MPa, and good elongation to fracture, regularly in excess of 5%, as well as by good forming properties.

A method for the manufacturing of high strength cold rolled steel sheets includes continuously annealing a cold rolled steel sheet that has a composition containing C: 0.05-0.3% mass, Si: 0.6-3.0% mass, Mn: 1.0-3.0% mass, P: 0.1% mass, S: ≦0.02% mass, Al: 0.01-1% mass, N: ≦0.01% mass, and Fe and inevitable impurities: balance, in a manner such that the cold rolled steel sheet is heated in a furnace using an oxidizing burner to a steel sheet temperature of ≧700° C., then soak-annealed in a reducing atmosphere furnace at 750-900° C., then cooled so the average cooling rate between 500° C. and 100° C. is ≧50° C./s. High-Si cold rolled steel sheets with high strength and good phosphatability while containing Si≧0.6% are obtained without controlling conditions so as to increase the dew point in the reducing atmosphere in the soaking furnace or to increase the vapor hydrogen partial pressure ratio.

A method for producing a formed member made of a steel sheet according to the present invention is characterized by preparing a steel sheet material having tensile strength of 500 MPa or less and containing a nitriding element; forming a formed member having a predetermined shape by performing a plastic forming on the steel sheet material; and performing a nitriding treatment on the formed member so that an average hardness in the sheet thickness direction of the resultant steel sheet member is Hv 300 or more by Vickers hardness, and further characterized in that the difference in hardness between the surface part and the inside center part in the thickness direction of the steel sheet member of the formed member is Hv 200 or less by Vickers hardness, thereby it is possible to reliably obtain a formed member having a sufficiently high strength after a nitriding treatment while ensuring a plastic formability of a steel sheet in obtaining a formed member made of a steel sheet member of high strength by performing a nitriding treatment after subjecting a steel sheet material to a plastic forming.

The plated steel plate has more than 1.2 as a Lankford value (r) which is a width deformation degree in a lengthwise direction thereof/a thickness deformation degree in the lengthwise direction thereof, a width deformation degree in a widthwise direction thereof/a thickness deformation degree in the widthwise direction thereof, a width deformation degree in an oblique direction thereof/a thickness deformation degree in the oblique direction thereof. In-plane anisotropy .DELTA.r which is the difference among the Lankford values (r) is set to be less than .+-.0.15 so that the elongation coefficient of the plated steel plate in lengthwise, widthwise, and oblique directions is almost constant, i.e., so that the generation of earring can be prevented in drawing and ironing a sheet comprising the steel plate into the battery can. In order to make the elongation coefficient of the plated steel plate constant in the three directions, a very low carbon steel plate is used. The steel plate is cold-rolled at 80-90 %. The plated layer is allowed to have a granular structure by annealing it after it is plated.
