A spark plug comprising a piezoelectric element that strains with the increase in pressure in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, and methods of making and using such a spark plug. The strain on the element generates a voltage across the poles of the piezoelectric element that varies with the cylinder pressure. This voltage can be monitored to determine the pressure in the cylinder. The voltage will increase until it is sufficient to create a spark between two poles that will be used to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. The voltage may be further increased by using the increasing cylinder pressure to accelerate a striker mass to impact the piezoelectric element. After ignition, the piezoelectric element strains further because of the rapid increase in pressure due to the combustion process. Sensing the voltage output after combustion can provide information about the engine cycle and indicate any anomalies such as pre-ignition, misfire, or knock.

The apparatus calculates a volume of the combustion chamber based on the crank angle detected by the crank angle detector and estimator for estimating a motoring pressure of the engine in accordance with a calculation equation using the calculated volume. The apparatus adjusts either of the pressure detected by the internal pressure sensor and the pressure estimated by the estimator during a compression stroke of the engine to minimize the error between the detected pressure and the estimated pressure. The apparatus determines a combustion state during a combustion stroke of the engine based on a relation between the pressure adjusted and the other pressure. The apparatus identifies parameters of the calculation equation during a compression stroke of the engine to minimize the error between the pressure detected by the internal pressure sensor and the pressure estimated by the estimator.

The ignition angle (Zu) is compared in a comparison device (12) with an optimum ignition angle (OZ) calculated in a parameter-dependent manner and, in the case of an optimum ignition angle (OZ) that is more retarded than the unrestricted specifiable ignition angle (Zu), this optimum ignition angle (OZ) is used for ignition of the internal combustion engine during specifiable time periods in alternation with the ignition angle (Zu), which can be specified without time restriction, while, in the opposite case, only the optimum ignition angle (OZ) is used for this purpose.

An analog signal of a direct current potential magnitude proportional to the peak combustion pressure of a monitored internal combustion engine cylinder is simultaneously applied to two mutually exclusive comparator circuits, each being arranged to produce a separate respective output signal when the monitored cylinder peak combustion pressure is less than a first predetermined value or greater than a second higher predetermined value. With a signal present upon the output of either comparator circuit, upon the occurrence of a clock signal produced when another selected engine cylinder is later fired, either an ignition spark advance or an ignition spark retard signal is produced as determined by the comparator circuit output signal present. The adjustable ignition spark timing mechanism of an associated ignition distributor is operated to retard the ignition spark in response to an ignition spark retard signal and to advance the ignition spark in response to an ignition spark advance signal. A reset signal produced after the clock signal resets the circuit in preparation for the next firing of the monitored cylinder.
