Disclosed is a high speed optical signal processor which includes a saturable absorber area including a substrate, an active layer, a clad layer and a first upper electrode which are sequentially formed on one face of the substrate, and a first lower electrode formed on the other face of the substrate; and a gain-clamped optical amplifier area including a substrate having a diffraction grating for generating a laser beam, an active layer, a clad layer and a second upper electrode which are sequentially formed on one face of the substrate, and a second lower electrode formed on the other face of the substrate, the second upper electrode being isolated from the first upper electrode of the saturable absorber area.

A menu displaying apparatus and method in a portable terminal are provided. In the menu displaying apparatus, a select image buffer stores select images, and an unselect image buffer stores unselect images. A controller reads a select image for a selected menu from the select image buffer, displays the select image together with a title text of the selected menu at a predetermined position in a menu region, reads unselect menu images for unselected menus from the unselect image buffer, and displays the unselect menu images together with title texts of the unselected menus at predetermined positions in the menu region.

An adaptive mode control apparatus and method for adaptive beamforming based on detection of a user direction sound are provided. The adaptive mode control apparatus includes a signal intensity detector that searches for signal intensity of each designated direction to detect signal intensity having a maximum value when a voice signal of each direction is input through at least one microphone; and an adaptive mode controller that compares the signal intensity having the maximum value detected through the signal intensity detector with a threshold value and determines whether to perform an adaptive mode of a Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC) according to the comparison results. Therefore, a lack of control of adaptation of an adaptive filter of the conventional art is solved. That is, as one condition for guaranteeing performance of adaptive beamforming, adaptation of an adaptive filter is not performed when noise of a sound with a high autocorrelation is cancelled.

Disclosed is a method and an apparatus for recognizing characters using an image. A camera is activated according to a character recognition request and a preview mode is set for displaying an image photographed through the camera in real time. An auto focus of the camera is controlled and an image having a predetermined level of clarity is obtained for character recognition from the images obtained in the preview mode. The image for character recognition is character-recognition-processed so as to extract recognition result data. A final recognition character row is drawn that excludes non-character data from the recognition result data. A first word is combined including at least one character of the final recognition character row and a predetermined maximum number of characters. A dictionary database that stores dictionary information on various languages using the first word is searched, so as to provide the user with the corresponding word.

Disclosed is a method for adjusting a ring tone volume in a mobile communication terminal. The method implements a function by which a user can directly adjust the ring tone volume in a mobile communication terminal in consideration of circumstances. To this end, the present invention includes a user interface screen by which a user can adjust the output volume level of the ring tone which rings according to the passage of time. Thus, the present invention provides a user interface screen by which a user can adjust the output volume level of a ring tone which rings according to the passage of time, and enables the user to set the output level of the ring tone and the output time of the ring tone at a corresponding level according to predetermined intervals through the screen.

A system and method for evaluating performance of a microphone for long-distance speech recognition, which enables a robot to receive and respond to voices. A robot, which includes a network robot, must correctly recognize speech in order to recognize the user and to perceive its surroundings, objective evaluation criteria are required for choosing a microphone to be used in the robot. The methods include measuring a degree of attenuation of the voice, measuring a degree of distortion of the voice, and simultaneously measuring the degree of attenuation of the voice and the degree of distortion of the voice. A standard for the choice of a microphone, which can be digitalized, for a speech recognition function of a robot, permits choice of a microphone which has good sensitivity and can pick up voices without distortion when used at a large distance.
