    摘要: A base station receives a reverse link signal from a given field unit that includes a common code (i.e., shared by other field units) and a unique orthogonal code (i.e., distinguishing the given field unit from other field units). The reverse link signal travels in a multi-path environment along a primary path and at least one secondary path. The base station makes a diversity decision based on the unique orthogonal code seen at two different phases. The base station determines a gross timing offset to align the common code of the given field unit with the common code from other field units using unique orthogonal codes. The given field unit makes a corresponding coarse adjustment of the phase of its common code.

    摘要: An improved arrangement is described for signaling enhanced capabilities of a wireless data communication system to a dual-mode wireless handset seeking access to such capabilities and normally operating in a first (non-enhanced) mode. The arrangement, which is especially advantageous for ascertaining operating mode capabilities of a new cellsite to which the handset is being handed off from an existing cellsite, includes a separate capabilities server that is associated with the system and contains a data base populated with information indicative of such capabilities. The handset generates a suitable query message which is transmitted to the data base in the first mode after the handoff to retrieve the capability information for the new cellsite location. The handset is switched from the first mode to the second (enhanced) mode for post-handoff operation if the retrieved capability information indicates that the new cellsite is capable of operation in the enhanced mode.

In the illustrative implementation, the feedback cancellation loop can receive signals as input from a cooperating antenna array and provide output signals such as a feedback leakage signal to a cooperating antenna array.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for staggering forward and reverse channel time slot allocation in a wireless communication allows a wireless communication unit, such as a base station processor or a subscriber access unit, to transmit a return message in less than a full time slot interval. Forward and reverse channel allocation occurs as a cycle of time slots occurring at periodic timing intervals. Transmission of a wireless frame carrying a message payload occurs at the beginning of the time slot. Since the forward and reverse channel allocation cycles need not be concurrent, or in phase, these cycles may be staggered with respect to each other. By staggering the forward and reverse channel allocation timing interval, the return message is sent after only a portion of a full timing interval, rather than being delayed up to one complete timing interval.
