Abstract: Disclosed embodiments facilitate wireless channel calibration, including ranging and direction finding, between wirelessly networked devices. In some embodiments. a method on a first station (STA) may comprise: transmitting a first NDPA frame to one or more second stations (STAs), the first NDPA frame comprising a first bit indicating that one or more subsequent frames comprise ranging or angular information; and transmitting, after a Short Interval Frame Space (SIFS) time interval, a second frame. The second frame may be one of: a Null Data Packet az (NDP_az) frame with information about a time of transmission of the NDP_az frame, or a Null Data Packet (NDP) frame, or a Beam Refinement Protocol (BRP) frame. The first NDPA frame may be unicast, multicast, or broadcast.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer-readable media, for a ranging protocol between two wireless local area network (WLAN) devices. In one aspect, the ranging protocol may be adjusted based on channel quality of a wireless medium between the WLAN devices. For example, a quantity of ranging frames and bandwidth for the ranging frames may be adjusted based on the channel quality. In some implementations, the channel quality may be determined using setup messages for the ranging protocol without a wireless association between the WLAN devices. The ranging protocol may be useful for range determination in an indoor environment where a WLAN is deployed. In some implementations, the ranging protocol may be used to determine a location of a WLAN device.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for ranging procedures performed using antenna switching. In one aspect, a device initiating a ranging procedure may transmit a ranging request, which may include antenna switching capabilities of the initiating device, a request for antenna switching by a responding device during the ranging procedure, or both. Ranging signaling may be communicated between the initiating device and the responding device using different transmit antennas, receive antennas, or both. In some implementations, ranging messages transmitted by the responding device may include transmit antenna indices used for transmission of different ranging messages, and receive antenna indices used for reception of different ranging response messages. The initiating device may estimate a range relative to the responding device based on round trip times (RTTs) associated with different antenna pairs used during the ranging procedure.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A ranging message procedure may employ protection by modifying a cyclic prefix of the ranging message to prevent an attacking device from transmitting a time-advanced copy of the cyclic prefix during symbol of the copied signal. For example, the modified cyclic prefix may include pseudo random training sequences or a set of zero-value symbols. The receiving device may determine a channel estimation technique that accounts for the modified cyclic prefix. The wireless devices performing the ranging measurement process may determine a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for the ranging message. The wireless devices may negotiate an MCS value and cyclic prefix configuration for the ranging measurement process. In some examples, the ranging message be encoded by applying a sequence of phase rotations or amplitude variations to the base sequence used to generate the sounding training signal.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for wireless communication. In one aspect, a method of wireless communication includes utilizing a sounding procedure to obtain compressed beamforming (CBF) information. The sounding procedure may be a single-user or multi-user sounding procedure. The CBF information may contain various information regarding a particular channel that an access point may use for transmission. The information may include per-tone SNR information which may be processed to determine characteristics of the channel. Various techniques may be utilized to determine the further characteristics of the channel. The determined characteristics of the channel may then be used to determine an appropriate guard interval (GI) between symbols that are to be transmitted. Appropriate GI selection in wireless communications may facilitate higher throughput while decreasing overhead due to unnecessary idle time.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are disclosed for performing ranging operations between an initiator device and a responder device. The initiator device may transmit, to the responder device, a fine timing measurement (FTM) request frame including a request to estimate angle information for a number of frames exchanged between the initiator device and the responder device and indicating a level of accuracy for the estimated angle information. The initiator device may receive a first FTM frame from the responder device, and may transmit an acknowledgement (ACK) frame to the responder device. The initiator device may receive, from the responder device, a second FTM frame including angle information of the first FTM frame and timing information of one or more of the exchanged frames.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are disclosed that may perform ranging operations between an initiator device and a responder device. The initiator device may request the responder device to perform a ranging operation. The responder device may transmit a first fine timing measurement (FTM) frame to the initiator device, may receive an acknowledgement (ACK) frame from the responder device, and may transmit a second FTM frame to the initiator device. The second FTM frame may include a time value and angle information. The time value may indicate a difference between a time of departure (TOD) of the first FTM frame and a time of arrival (TOA) of the ACK frame. The angle information may indicate a direction of the initiator device relative to the responder device. The initiator device may determine its position, relative to the responder device, based at least in part on the received time value and angle information.

Abstract: A ranging operation between a first wireless device and a second wireless may be performed by: sending, to the second wireless device, a data frame including a request for the second wireless device to report its actual SIFS duration to the first wireless device; determining a time of departure (TOD) of the data frame; receiving, from the second wireless device, a response frame including SIFS information indicative of the actual SIFS duration of the second wireless device; determining a time of arrival (TOA) of the response frame; and determining a round trip time (RTT) of the data frame and the response frame using the TOD of the data frame, the TOA of the response frame, and the actual SIFS duration of the second wireless device.
