    摘要: A liquid crystal device is constituted by a layer of a chiral smectic liquid crystal, a pair of substrates oppositely disposed to sandwich the liquid crystal and each provided with an electrode for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal, at least one of the substrates being provided with a uniaxial aligning axis for aligning the liquid crystal, and a polarizer disposed on at least one of the substrates. The liquid crystal has an alignment characteristic such that it is aligned to provide an average molecular axis to be placed in a monostable alignment state under no voltage application, is tilted from the monostable alignment state in one direction when supplied with a voltage of a first polarity at a tilting angle which varies depending on magnitude of the supplied voltage, and is tilted from the monostable alignment state in the other direction when supplied with a voltage of a second polarity opposite to the first polarity at a tilting angle, said tilting angles providing maximum tilting angles &bgr;1 and &bgr;2 formed under application of the voltages of the first and second polarities, respectively, satisfying &bgr;1>&bgr;2 or &bgr;1=&bgr;2. The liquid crystal layer in the liquid crystal device is set to have a refractive index anisotropy and a layer thickness giving a retardation under voltage application which is in an optimum retardation range determined based on an arrangement of the polarizer and a wavelength of light passing through the liquid crystal layer, thus improving a resultant transmittance.

    摘要: An aligning method of a chiral smectic liquid crystal includes the steps of: disposing a chiral smectic liquid crystal between a pair of electrode plates, the chiral smectic liquid crystal having a layer spacing-changing characteristic providing a layer spacing which increases on temperature decrease in a first temperature range in smectic A phase; and subjecting the chiral smectic liquid crystal to a heat treatment including a sequence of cooling from a higher temperature phase to a second temperature range in smectic A phase including at least a portion of the first temperature range, at least one cycle of heating and cooling within the second temperature range, and further cooling to a smectic phase lower than smectic phase. The heat treatment, particularly at least one cycle of heating and cooling in smectic A phase, is effective in suppressing an alignment (orientation) irregularity due to the presence of two regions different in characteristics, thus improving a drive margin.

    摘要: A novel bis-phosphate compound is provided which can be applied to a wide range of reactive substrates and reactions as an asymmetric reaction catalyst and can realize an asymmetric reaction affording a high yield and a high enantiomeric excess. The bis-phosphate compound has a tetraaryl skeleton represented by General Formula (1). In an asymmetric reaction, an amidodiene and an unsaturated aldehyde compound are reacted with each other in the presence of the optically active bis-phosphate compound to give an optically active amidoaldehyde. The invention allows a reaction such as an asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction to proceed efficiently, which has been difficult with conventional mono-phosphate compounds. Thus, the invention enables an industrially feasible method for the production of optically active amidoaldehydes, optically active β-amino acid derivatives, optically active diamine compounds, optically active pyrrolidine derivatives and optically active dihydropyran derivatives which are useful as products such as medicines, agricultural chemicals and chemical products as well as synthesis intermediates for such products.
