A method of manufacturing an insulating film-forming material comprising a curable composition comprisING (A) an inorganic polymer compound or an organic polymer compound and (B) an organic solvent, which comprises treating the curable composition with a zeta potential-producing filter material. Because the curable composition has a very small content of alkali metals and heavy metals, the composition is suitably used for the manufacture of materials for forming insulating films which have a wide variety of applications in the electronic field.

A modified silicone compound having a branch polymer comprising a hydrophilic group, this compound being synthesised by performing an addition reaction between an organohydrogenpolysiloxane, and at least one compound chosen from an alkenylated polyoxyalkenylated compound, an alkenylated glycerine compound and an alkenylated sugar in the presence of a platinum catalyst or rhodium catalyst, and a cosmetic material containing this modified silicone compound. This compound is purified by decomposing aldehyde condensation products remaining in the silicone by alkylating the remaining unsaturated bonds after hydrogenating the reaction liquor after said addition reaction, and treating with an aqueous solution of pH 7 or lower containing an acidic substance, or decomposing the propenyl etherated polyether in the reaction liquor after said addition reaction by treating with an aqueous solution of pH 7 or lower containing an acidic substance, and then alkylating the generated aldehydes and alkenylated ether compounds by hydrogenation. The degree of unsaturation (meq/g) in the modified silicone compound is 0.002 or less. The generation amount of aldehydes when heat ageing is performed in 0.23N hydrochloric acid at 50null C. for 0.5 hours is 70 ppm or less of the modified silicone compound.

Optically clear, reinforced cross-linked silicone elastomers of the invention contain 12 to 18 mol percent of aryl substituted siloxane units of the formula R4R5-SiO, end blockers containing siloxane units of the formula R1R2R3SiO.5, and dialkyl siloxane units of the formula R6R7-SiO. R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl or substituted alkyl or substituted aryl groups, and R3 is an alkenyl group. R4 and R5 are phenyl or mono lower alkyl substituted phenyl groups. R6 and R7 are methyl or ethyl groups. The polymer has a degree of polymerization between 100 to 2000, and preferably approximately 250. The polymer also contains trimethyl silyl treated silica as a reinforcer in the weight ratio of approximately 15 to 45 parts of reinforcer to 100 parts of the polymer. After cross-linking, the polymer has properties of an optical refractive index which is at least 1.44, a type A durometer hardness of at least 35, tensile strength of at least 500 psi and tear strength of at least 20 pli. The foregoing properties render the cross-linked polymer especially suitable for forming the bodies of intraocular lenses.

Linear or straight-chain trimethylsiloxy endcapped methylhydrogen polysiloxanes are made by contacting hexamethyldisiloxane with a highly pure methylhydrogen cyclic siloxane, in the presence of anhydrous trifluoromethane sulfonic acid catalyst at room temperature. Trimethylsiloxy endcapped alkylmethyl siloxanes are made by reacting the linear or straight-chain trimethylsiloxy endcapped methylhydrogen polysiloxanes with an alpha-olefin, in the presence of a platinum catalyst. Alkylmethyl cyclic siloxanes containing zero parts per million residual .ident.SiH, are made by reacting anhydrous alpha-olefins and a highly pure methylhydrogen cyclic siloxane, in the presence of dried platinum supported on carbon catalyst.
