    Abstract: An optical fiber sensing system with improved state detection includes: a cable including optical fibers; a reception unit configured to receive an optical signal from at least one optical fiber included in the cable and acquire a first parameter and a second parameter having a pattern in accordance with a state of a target to be monitored based on the optical signal; and a state detection unit configured to detect a predetermined event based on the pattern that the first parameter has and then detect the state of the target to be monitored based on the pattern that the second parameter has.

    Abstract: A flexible, rapid deployable perimeter monitoring system and method that employs distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technologies and includes a deployment/operations field vehicle including an interrogator and analyzer/processor. The deployment/operations field vehicle is configured to field deploy a ruggedized fiber optic sensor cable in an arrangement that meets a specific application need, and subsequently interrogate/sense via DFOS any environmental conditions affecting the deployed fiber optic sensor cable. Such sensed conditions include mechanical vibration, acoustic, and temperature that may be advantageously sensed/evaluated/analyzed in the deployment/operations vehicle and subsequently communicated to a central location for further evaluation and/or coordination with other monitoring systems. Upon completion, the field vehicle and DFOS reconfigure a current location or redeployed to another location.

    Abstract: An assembly and method for detecting cross bores involving a sewer system and a gas pipe includes an acoustic generator placed within an interior of the sewer system and an acoustic receiver placed either within an interior of the gas pipe or in proximity to an end of the gas pipe. The acoustic generator generates an acoustic signal to transmit through the interior of a sewer pipe of the sewer system. A controller detects, in response to the acoustic receiver hearing the acoustic signal, a cross bore involving the sewer pipe and the gas pipe. A microphone may be placed within the interior of the sewer system at a location remote from the acoustic generator. In this case, the controller determines, in response to the acoustic receiver not hearing the acoustic signal and the microphone hearing the acoustic signal, that a cross bore involving the sewer pipe and the gas pipe is absent.

    Abstract: Techniques for low power gunshot detection are disclosed. Infrared information is collected using a gunshot sensor device. The infrared information is collected using mid-infrared band sensing to provide motion detection. Additional infrared information is buffered using the gunshot sensor device. The additional infrared information is collected using near-infrared band sensing. The buffering is enabled by the motion detection. Acoustic information is collected using the gunshot sensor device. The collecting acoustic information is enabled by the motion detection. A gunshot is detected using the gunshot sensor device. The detecting is based on the additional infrared information and the acoustic information. The detecting includes monitoring the acoustic information to identify a high-intensity gunshot sound and correlating the high-intensity gunshot sound to the infrared information that was buffered. The gunshot sensor device uses cable-free communication to a network and notifies the network of a possible gunshot occurrence.
