The present invention provides a current limiting circuit breaker having a plurality of current responsive devices for opening a pair of contacts upon short circuit conditions. One such device is a conventional magnetic tripping mechanism. The other device utilizes an insulating object driven by a magnetic force caused by the short circuit current. Upon opening of the contacts with the use of the insulating object, let-through current flows through a secondary contact, positioned on the insulating object, to a positive temperature coefficient resistivity element which limits the current and arcing in the contacts. In an alternative embodiment, at least one steel component is added to increase the magnetic force, thereby providing a greater force on the insulating object. An insulation component is also added to further suppress any arc generated between the contacts when going from a closed state to an open state. In another alternative embodiment, the magnetic tripping mechanism is actuated by the device utilizing the insulating object driven by the magnetic force.

A sliding plate engages moveable structure such as the actuating lever of an existing wall switch and separates or connects contacts to provide a momentary contact function in a potentially very thin but robust and economical switch suitable for inclusion within a switch plate cover. Momentary contact is provided at an intermediate location between extreme positions of the actuating lever of the existing switch or other moveable structure. Additional contacts can be provided to alter switch function and/or allow discrimination of direction of movement at an intermediate location. The switch can be retrofit to any existing structure without modification of that structure or disturbance of wiring to which that structure is connected.

A circuit interrupter in the form of a circuit breaker (10) is shown having a movable contact (14a) which moves between contacts engaged and contacts disengaged position relative to a stationary contact (16a). An arc paddle (20) is mounted in a housing (12) for spring biased pivotal motion of an arc dissipating portion between a position out of alignment with the movable and stationary contacts and in engagement with the side of the movable contact when the contacts are in the contacts engaged position and a position in which the arc dissipating portion is in alignment with and in between the contacts when the contacts are in the contacts disengaged position to force arcs which occur between the contacts to extend their travel path and dissipate the arc in an improved shortened period of time. In an alternative embodiment the arc paddle (22) is generally U-shaped having two legs (22a, 22b) connected by a bight (22c). The paddle is pivotably mounted at the bight with one leg disposed in alignment with but beyond the contacts and the other leg disposed out of alignment with the contacts and closely adjacent the side of the movable contact when the contacts are in engagement. When the movable contact separates from the stationary contact, motion is transferred to the one leg causing the paddle to pivot with other leg moving into alignment with and in between the two contacts.

After one end of the press button is pressed, the insulator does not push the protrudent part of the metal sheet so that the electrical contact contacts the point contact and the switch breaker is at a conducting state. When the current load is too large and the metal sheet is too hot and bent, or when the other end of the press button is pressed and the insulator pushes the protrudent part, the electrical contact is separated from the point contact and the switch breaker is at a nonconducting state. The design of pushing the protrudent part backward by the insulator to move the left end of the metal sheet backward can prevent the occurrence of arc between the electrical contact and the point contact. Further, because the insulator presses the protrudent part and does not contact the electrical contact and point contact, the electrical contact and point contact are not worn away. Therefore, the life of the switch breaker is extended.

A current responsive latching apparatus may be employed in a dropout fuseholder or other electrical component for retaining the component in a current-carrying position and disconnecting and isolating the electrical component upon the occurrence of an overcurrent of a predetermined magnitude. The apparatus includes a current path through the component, including a current-carrying stud or conductor, a portion of which extends outside the component for releasably engaging a support member. A latching apparatus, which may include an actuating member of memory allow or a bimetallic material, engages the conductor to retain the support member in a supporting position beneath the electrical component. The apparatus may further include a heater element in the current path to ensure that the actuation member is heated to the temperature necessary to cause it to change shape and release the conductor upon the presence of an overcurrent.

The fuseholder includes a current limiting fuse mounted within a fuse body and a lower contact and hinge assembly. The fuse body has contact assemblies mounted on each end thereof. The lower contact assembly on the fuse body is mounted on a hinge which is rotatably supported on an interchangeable cutout mounting. The current limiting fuse includes a fuse element spirally wound around a spider which extends the length of the fuse body. The fuse element includes a high current fusible element and a low current fuse element. The fusible element includes a plurality of spaced reduced areas and is supported on the spider by support surfaces which are located between adjacent reduced areas of the fusible element. An auxiliary wire also extends the length of the fuse body about the spider. The hinge includes a hinge member rotatably mounted on the interchangeable cutout mounting, a connective member supporting the contact assemblies and fuse body with current limiting fuse, and a latch for latching the hinge member to the connective member in a contracted position. The latch is connected to a trigger wire attached to the lower end of the auxiliary wire to maintain the hinge and connective members in their contracted position. Upon the melting of the trigger wire due to a current overload, the trigger wire releases the latch thereby allowing the connective member to move to an extended position with respect to the hinge member such that the current limiting fuse drops out of the interchangeable cutout mounting.
