A three-layer asphalt composition shingle where the top layer is of a full width, a middle layer is less than the full width, and a bottom layer has a width shorter than the middle layer. The middle and top layers of the shingle have tabs and cutouts. The tabs of each such layer generally differ in some feature. Moreover, the corresponding tabs between the middle layer and top layer also differ with respect to some feature, such as a lengthwise size, a widthwise size, shape or in color. Each of the three layers includes color zones, and often plural color zones. The different tab features and the different color features of the various layers provide a high degree of randomness to enhance a visual appearance to a roof shingled with such type of shingles.

This invention relates to a color stable pigment composition for coating hard mineral granules employed for weather surfacing asphalt roofing and siding shingles. The composition is a 40-60% aqueous slurry of pigment containing ferrosoferric oxide and a silicate/clay mixture which is suitable for coating the surface of the mineral granules. The invention also pertains to a process for the manufacture of the coated granules, to the dry coated mineral granule product containing ferrosoferric oxide bonded in a silicate/clay matrix which is suitable for surfacing asphaltic shingles, to the dried composition containing from about 5 to about 50 wt. % total pigment in a silicate/clay matrix in which the pigment contains Fe3O4 in a concentration of between about 2 and about 100% and to a Fe3O4 pigment mixture per se.

Method of preparing colored roofing granules (18) from granulated mineral-containing matter having an elemental iron content of about 15% to about 70% is disclosed. The method comprises heating the granules (18) to a temperature of from about 450.degree. C. to about 1,000.degree. C. and maintaining the temperature for a period of time sufficient to effect a color change in the granules. The resulting oxidized granules are permanently colored and will not fade in use.

The coating comprises a first layer of silicon carbide and a second layer of a glass, glass-ceramic or a low-melting-point metal such as tin or an alloy thereof. Particularly when such second layer is a glass, e.g. an SiO.sub.2 -containing glass, or a glass-ceramic, preferably the silicon carbide coating is pretreated, e.g. by oxidation thereof to form a thin layer of SiO.sub.2 prior to application of the glass layer. The glass layer can be an SiO.sub.2 glass formed by sputtering or by decomposition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) applied to the oxidized silicon carbide coating. An alkali metal oxide, e.g. Na.sub.2 O, or an alkaline earth metal oxide, e.g. BaO, can be added to the SiO.sub.2 glass.

The invention relates to a method of patterning a concrete surface and a pattern transfer mat for use in the method. The pattern transfer mat has a transfer surface having three-dimensional irregularities and carrying a multiplicity of grains to be transferred to the substrate concrete. Concrete is cast against the transfer surface of the mat and cured in situ and the mat is then detached. The aesthetic grains are grains having a cement powder deposited thereon beforehand. The cement powder absorbs water to cause fine air cells therein to collapse. Thus, the finished surface of the case concrete structure is made smoother.

Radar attenuating compositions comprising a low viscosity siloxane polymer, a resinous crosslinker therefor and carbonyl iron powder have improved thermal stability when exposed to temperatures as high as 450.degree. F. The particular crosslinker that is used in the compositions of this invention provides improved stability for the compositions at room temperature storage conditions and also in the cured form. The compositions can be sprayed and/or molded and cured at room temperature and/or elevated temperatures, as desired.

In addition, a unique carrier plate can be used to carry the donor and intermediate receiver elements through laminating equipment. This carrier plate has a thermoplastic adhesive layer with sufficient tackiness to prevent irreversible dimensional change during lamination.
