An intercooler for the stern drive of a boat engine includes a cover that is attached to the stern drive housing. The cover includes an inner compartment, which communicates internally with the stern drive and accommodates lubricating oil used by the stern drive. An outer jacket is disposed adjacent the compartment. Ambient water is introduced into and discharged from the water jacket such that the ambient water circulates through the jacket to cool the inner compartment and the oil contained therein.

An air intake device for a vertically oriented multi-cylinder outboard boat engine having an engine block, a crank case, and vertically spaced fuel intake ports. The air intake device includes a surge tank attached to the crank case and having vertically spaced air intake pipes extending from the surge tank to the engine intake ports. An insulation layer is mounted between the surge tank and the crank case.

A bottom well and sea water piping system for vessels with which system the supply of sea water is provided for a vessel for engine cooling and other uses. The invention has only one bottom well preferably arranged on the vessel's middle line, and that the sea water piping as a whole is on the delivery side of submersible pumps. All the openings and lead-throughs of the bottom well are above the water level, most preferably on a covering plate. The sea water piping system is regulated by a heat regulating valve and a pressure regulating valve. The flow is regulated with an operating speed regulator for the motors of the submersible pumps by means of a frequency converter.

A cooling water intake (1) is constructed as an integral body from a composite material, having a duct (2) running from a first opening (3), adapted to face toward the sea, and to a second opening (4), where the cooling water intake may be connected to the cooling water system of a motor. The duct (2) is curved inward and toward the stern, and the duct cross section is flattened near the first opening, which faces to the sea. Toward the second opening (4) the cross section of the duct progresses into a conventional circular cross section. The invention also relates to a method for fabricating a cooling water intake body.

A marine engine exhaust system (10) and method for use with a marine engine. The exhaust system (10) includes a muffler body (20) defining an internal cavity (22) for receiving exhaust gases from a marine engine (12), the cavity (22) defining a reservoir portion (28) for holding water. The exhaust system (10) also includes at least one inlet passageway (24) communicating with the cavity (22) for receiving exhaust gases from the engine (12) and communicating them to the cavity (22). At least one water supply passageway (32) is provided which communicates with the cavity (22) and which is placed in fluid communication with a water supply such that water can be communicated to the reservoir portion (28). Further, at least one outlet passageway (40) is provided through which exhaust gases and water are ejected from the cavity (22). The outlet passageway (40) has an inlet port (42) disposed in the reservoir portion (28) of the cavity (22) and has an outlet port (44) exterior to the muffler body (20). The method of the invention includes the steps of communicating exhaust gases under pressure to the cavity (22) through the inlet passageway (24), and injecting water into the cavity (22) through the water supply passageway (32).

Two embodiments of outboard motors having four-cycle internal combustion engines with the crankshaft of the engine rotating about a vertically extending axis in a crankcase chamber formed at the front of the engine. A main oil gallery extends along the crankcase member and receives oil from an oil filter mounted on the crankcase member at the front of the engine.

A fresh water flushing system for a marine engine in a boat for use whether the boat is in or out of the water is disclosed. The system comprises a control panel mounted on the interior of the boat, a plurality of tubular T-shaped interconnection fittings in a raw sea water cooling conduit, and a fresh water flush valve. The components are connected for fresh water fluid flow. The fresh water flush valve has valve plunger for establishing fresh water flow between the control panel and the T-shaped interconnection fittings.

The present invention relates to modified fuel tanks for use in watercrafts and, in particular, to the use of a fuel cell in a fuel tank to concentrate fuel about the fuel intake line to prevent air from entering the fuel intake line due to shifting of fuel within the fuel tank. The fuel cell includes a body portion having four walls defining a rectangular inner chamber. Apertures, preferably square apertures, are formed in the port and starboard walls of the fuel cell. These permit fuel to enter the fuel cell as the fuel shifts within the tank. Additionally, at least one small aperture is formed adjacent the base of the fuel cell to ensure that the level of fuel in the fuel cell is always at least equal to the level of fuel in the fuel tank. Inner and outer mounting plates are used to mount the fuel cell to a standard fuel tank. The outer mounting plate is also adapted to receive fuel intake and return lines, as well as fuel gauges.

Two embodiments of water cooled outboard motors having a discharge spray that will provide an indication that coolant is flowing through the cooling jacket of the engine. The outboard motors may be swung through 180.degree. for reverse operation and in the reversed position, the discharge spray is positioned in proximity to the transom of the watercraft. Devices are provided for disabling the discharge spray at operator selection.

An intelligent sea water cooling system including a first fluid cooling loop coupled to a heat exchanger, a second fluid cooling loop coupled to the heat exchanger and including a fluid pump for circulating fluid through the second fluid cooling loop, and a controller operatively connected to the fluid pump. The controller may be configured to monitor an actual temperature in the first fluid cooling loop and to adjust a speed of the fluid pump based on the monitored temperature in order to achieve a desired temperature in the first fluid cooling loop.
