    Abstract: A display may have a pixel array such as a liquid crystal pixel array. The pixel array may be illuminated with backlight illumination from a backlight unit. The backlight unit may include a printed circuit board, a plurality of light-emitting diodes mounted on the printed circuit board, at least one light spreading layer formed over the printed circuit board that spreads light received from the plurality of light-emitting diodes, a partially reflective layer formed over the at least one light spreading layer, a color conversion layer formed over the partially reflective layer, a collimating layer formed over the color conversion layer, a brightness enhancement film formed over the collimating layer, and a diffuser formed over the brightness enhancement film. The at least one light spreading layer may include two light spreading layers with elongated protrusions that are rotated relative to each other.

    Abstract: An array of pixels in a display may be illuminated by a backlight having an array of light-emitting diodes in an array of respective cells. A reflector is used to reflect light from the light-emitting diodes through the array of pixels. Within the cells, the reflector has cross-sectional profiles that help distribute light emitted from the light-emitting diodes toward edges of the cells. A light diffuser layer for the backlight may have a partially reflective layer such as a thin-film interference filter with an angularly dependent transmission. Within each cell, the reflector may have cross-sectional profiles with portions that are parabolic or elliptical.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display. Backlight structures may be used to provide backlight for the display. The backlight structures may include a light guide plate. The light guide plate may include a planar extended portion that guides light along the back of the display and an integrated edge reflector along one or more edges of the planar extended portion. The planar extended portion and the integrated edge reflector may be formed from respective first and second shots of material. The integrated edge reflector may be formed from a polymer material with embedded reflective structures such as glass microbeads or other oxide particles. The backlight structures may include a reflective layer that is attached to the integrated edge reflector of the light guide plate using adhesive. The display may include active display pixels formed over a portion of the integrated edge reflector.

    Abstract: A display may have an array of display pixels for displaying images for a user. A backlight unit may provide backlight for the display pixels. The backlight unit may have a substrate such as a printed circuit substrate. An array of locally dimmable backlight elements may be mounted on the substrate. The substrate may be mounted against an inner surface of a metal electronic device housing or other support structure in an electronic device. Each backlight element may have a semiconductor package containing a semiconductor die. The semiconductor die may have a light-emitting diode and a light-emitting-diode control circuit. The light-emitting-diode control circuit may have a pair of transistors and a capacitor. One of the transistors may be connected in series with the light-emitting diode. The light-emitting diode control circuit may receive control signals on a gate line terminal and a source line terminal.
