The present invention relates to sulfonated elastomeric polymers which are copolymers of isoprene and sodium styrene sulfonate or teropolymers of isoprene, styrene and sodium styrene sulfonate wherein these sulfonated polymers function as viscosification agents when added to oil-based drilling muds which are the fluids used to maintain pressure, cool drill bits and lift cuttings from the holes in the drilling operation for oil and gas wells. The sulfonated and elastomeric polymers have about 5 to about 100 meq. of sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the sulfonated elastomeric polymer, wherein the sulfonated groups are neutralized with a metallic cation or an amine or ammonium counterion. A polar cosolvent can optionally be added to the mixture of oil drilling mud and sulfonated elastomeric polymer, wherein the polar cosolvent increases the solubility of the sulfonated elastomeric polymer in the oil drilling mud by decreasing the strong ionic interactions between the sulfonate groups of the sulfonated polymer.

This invention relates to the injection moldable and extrusion type electrically conductive polymeric blend compositions having a viscosity at 200.degree. C. at 0.73 sec.sup.-1 of less than about 8.times.10.sup.5 poises. The compositions used for elastomeric articles include a neutralized sulfonated polymer; graphite fiber at a concentration of about 1 to about 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of neutralized sulfonated polymer; and a preferential plasticizer at about less than 60 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the neutralized sulfonated polymer. The composition may also optionally include fillers, oils and other additives. These blend compositions can be readily processed due to their superior rheological properties on conventional plastic fabrication equipment, especially on low and high pressure injection molding or extrusion equipment into electrically conductive articles having excellent physical and electrical properties.

This invention relates to a novel elastomeric foamed material which has been found to exhibit a variety of unusual and desirable features both in its physical properties and in its process of manufacture. These foamed compositions of a lightly sulfonated elastomeric gum contain a non-volatile polar plasticizer and preferably extenders such as oil and fillers. These elastomer foams exhibit an unusual profile of physical properties including extremely rapid production, melt reprocessability of fabricated articles, a novel memory characteristic, and high temperature reshaping of foamed objects while maintaining a good foam structure. These novel foams can be manufactured with relatively uniform cell structures and with small cell sizes at foam densities from near bulk density to less than 0.1g/cc.

The instant invention relates to compositions comprising a copolymer of sulfur dioxide and one or more olefins in combination with a hydrocarbon oil which is a mixture of paraffinic, aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons having a solubility parameter of about 7 to about 8.5. The olefins are alpha olefins, at least one having a carbon number of 20 or more, more preferably a carbon number of from 20 to 40. The copolymers useful in preparing the compositions of the instant invention are crystalline solids, which are combined with a sufficient amount, preferably from about 5 to 24 pph, of the hydrocarbon oil to yield flexible materials. The above compositions are useful as coatings.

This invention relates to novel foamed polymeric products which are prepared by foaming an ionic polymer in the presence of a volatile polar compound which acts as a plasticizer for the ionic groups present in said ionic polymer. The ionic polymer comprises from about 0.4 to 10 mole % pendant acid groups, especially sulfonic acid groups which have been neutralized to a degree of at least 97%, preferably 100%. In a most preferred embodiment of the instant invention, the foamed polymeric product is prepared from a sulfonated polystyrene polymer. This high strength, low density foam of the instant invention can be reprocessed by admixing with a low boiling solvent for the sulfonate groups, e.g., methanol, and repeating the above foaming process.
