A p type semiconductor layer, an i type crystalline (polycrystalline, microcrystalline) photoelectric conversion layer, and an n type semiconductor layer are successively formed in the same plasma CVD deposition chamber. The p type semiconductor layer is produced on condition that the pressure in the deposition chamber is at least 5 Torr. Accordingly, a silicon-based thin film photoelectric conversion device having the p type semiconductor layer, the i type crystalline photoelectric conversion layer, and the n type semiconductor layer stacked on each other is manufactured. A method of manufacturing a silicon-based thin film photoelectric conversion device is thus implemented to produce a photoelectric conversion device having a superior performance and quality by a simple apparatus at a low cost and with high productivity.

At this time, a hot lean abnormality determination value KHL is set leaner than an ordinary lean abnormality determination value KLL, and a hot rich abnormality determination value KHH is set richer than an ordinary rich abnormality determination value KLH by abnormality determination value setting means when the engine compartment temperature is high. As a result, it is possible to diagnose whether or not the fuel supply system is abnormal (i.e., an abnormal deviation in the air/fuel ratio) while preventing the mistake even when the engine compartment temperature is high, so that the early discovery of the abnormality and the prevention of the mistaken diagnosis are made compatible.

The semantic recognition system includes a speech signal input part for receiving input speech signals, a speech recognizer for recognizing a corresponding word based on the input speech signals, a recognized word-semantic number converter including a semantic number-registered word list indicating the correspondence between a semantic number representing a meaning of a word and a registered word belonging to the semantic number, an application interface and an application handling the semantic numbers as data. The corresponding word is recognized by the speech recognizer, based on the speech signals input to the speech signal input part. The recognized word is converted to a corresponding semantic number by the recognized word-semantic number converter. The converted semantic number is notified to the application via the application interface.

A semi-spherical lens of the optical pickup device has a surface 9b facing an optical disc 20 and has a pre-set refractive index. The optical pickup device also has a slider 12 adapted for securing the lens 9 and for being in sliding contact with an optical disc 20, and a spring plate 13 adapted for thrusting and supporting the slider in sliding contact with the optical disc 20. With the optical pickup device, high density reproduction may be realized, while the tolerance value for warping during disc molding or the tolerance value for warping due to moisture absorption may be increased. In addition, the production yield and the degree of freedom in selecting the disc materials may be improved.

In a misfire detecting apparatus of an internal combustion engine, a difference in rotational-speed variance from a rotation signal NE of a crankshaft and the difference in rotational-speed variance is compared with a predetermined misfire criterion value in order to make a determination as to whether a misfire has occurred in the internal combustion engine. The misfire detecting apparatus is applied to a six-cylinder internal combustion engine. An ECU employed in the misfire detecting apparatus is used for calculating differences in rotational-speed variance by using a 720.degree. CA, a 360.degree. CA, and a 120.degree. CA differential techniques. The differences in rotational-speed variance computed by using the differential techniques are each compared with a respective predetermined misfire criterion value. An outcome of the comparison is used for updating a misfire count. The ECU makes a final determination as to whether a misfire has occurred in the internal combustion engine from data of a plurality of such misfire counts.

This treatment of wood is safe. Since the methylsilicone resins thus incorporated and fixed within wood are not leached out in water, the modified wood maintains flame retardance for a very long time upon exposure to rain and dew and has water repellence, decay resistance and dimensional stability.

The electrophoresis apparatus has a capillary filled with gel for use in electrophoresis. A first buffer solution container is provided for storing a buffer solution and introducing a sample labelled with a fluorescent substance into an inlet of said capillary for electrophoresis. A second buffer solution container is provided for storing a buffer solution containing a luminous solution, into which said sample is continually introduced from an outlet of said capillary after electrophoresis. Electrophoresis means is provided for subjecting said sample to electrophoresis by applying a predetermined value of voltage to said gel through which said sample is being transferred while being electrophoresed. Light receiving means is disposed underneath the outlet of said capillary to read fluorescence emitted from said sample from bottom in a direction in which said sample is approaching closer. This electrophoresis apparatus has benefits in that it can read an electrophoresis pattern of a sample of a nucleic acid or a protein obtained by subjecting the sample to electrophoresis with a high sensitivity without requiring any expensive device structure such as a laser beam source system. Thus, it is cheaper than conventional systems requiring such a laser beam system and is easier to handle.

A metal casing surrounds the unitary assembly so that the metal casing surrounds and supports a portion of the sides of the plate brick, a portion of the bottom of the plate brick, the sides of porous brick, and a portion of the sides of the submerged nozzle, including the shoulder portions. The metal casing further includes gas feed and discharge pipes therethrough in communication with the gas pool.
