Abstract: The invention relates to an emergency running ring for pneumatic tires mounted on vehicle rims. A lubricant is contained in cavities formed by virtue of the shape of the ring, or is contained in auxiliary members mounted in openings in the ring or mounted on the surface of the ring. In all instances, the loss of tire pressure due to emergency conditions causes the lubricant to be released so as to reduce the friction between the inner face of the tire cover and the ring.

Abstract: A run-flat support and tire assembly designed so that when air sealed within a tire is lost, the vehicle may be supported by support members in place of air pressure within the tire. The run-flat tire has a split rim, a tubeless tire mounted on the rim, and a plurality of annularly disposed circular support members. The support members each comprises a thin-wall casing body having lattice-like reinforcing ribs for partitioning the interior of the casing body into a plurality of chambers. Connecting protrusions project from the casing body. The connecting protrusions are detachably connected to one another for each incorporation of the support members into the tire.

Abstract: A wire wheel is provided in which some of the array of spokes extending between the hub and the rim penetrate the latter in the outboard bead seat. This bead seat is of smaller diameter than the inboard bead seat but is covered by a ribbon of a plastics material the outer diameter of which corresponds to the bead seat. The plastics ribbon is trapped in the channel of the outboard bead seat and seals the spoke holes penetrating the outboard bead seat. Nevertheless a metal step is exposed above the plastics ribbon for abutment by the toe of the outboard tire bead (not shown).

Abstract: A tire and rim assembly for retaining a deflated tire on a rim in which a pair of bead portions are mounted in bead seats at the edges of the rim. At least one of the bead portions is adhered to the rim at one of the bead seats with a cement having sufficient bonding strength to retain the bead portion on the rim during operation of the tire in the deflated condition. The adhesive bond may be broken without damage to the bead portions of the tire to dismount the tire from the rim after the vehicle is stopped.

Abstract: A safety or emergency insert device positioned on a wheel rim inside a tire chamber to support the tire in a deflated condition. The device has an annular ring member of substantially C-shaped cross section which member has a rim-engaging portion, an axially extending tire tread support portion and a curved intermediate portion joining the rim-engaging portion with one lateral edge of the tire tread support portion. The tread support portion is radially deflectable when a radial load is applied thereto by the weight of a vehicle when the tire surrounding the device is deflated. The annular ring member is made preferably of resilient plastic, spring steel or other suitable resilient material which will provide deflection when the support device is supporting a vehicle running on a flat tire.

Abstract: A safety wheel rim for use with pneumatic tires has a removable band which is securable so as to obstruct the mouth of the well used to receive the beads of a tire when fitting the tire onto the rim. The band can thus be locked against radial expansion regardless of the position of the tire beads so that the beads cannot accidentally enter the well in the event of deflation of the tire while travelling. The well may be offset from the median plane of the rim and also spaced from the bead-retaining flanges. Examples of the securing means for the band shown are an inflation valve stem which is screw-threaded through the outer of overlapping ends of the band and which cannot be inflated unless the band is secured, and screws arranged to tighten the band circumferentially.

Abstract: A tire bead retaining member for a pneumatic tire and divided rim assembly comprising an annular band of sheet material having a diameter and width such as to enable the band to be fitted around the base portion of the rim to engage and hold in spacedapart relationship the beads of an associated tire. The sides of the band are provided with radially outwardly formed flanges which abut the tire beads to form an air-tight seal for the inflation chamber of the tire.
